Replacing headlight, taillight, and signals. Help.
« on: August 07, 2015, 10:57:47 PM »
I've done what research I can but haven't found any definitive answer. I want to replace my headlight, taillight, and signals. I plan on using these LED signals and taillight.

All I'll need is a relay for the signals, correct? Will this work?
http://www.dimecitycycles.com/replacement-3-prong-flasher-relay.html

As far as the headlight. I'm not sure. I want something brighter than stock, but not over $100 and something that won't be a burden on the battery in city stop/go riding. I can't decided between H4 or halogen.

Maybe something like this?

Any suggestions on what to get? And will this setup just wire in, in addition to the new relay, and work fine?

Thanks

Why not ask DCC?

I have that same headlight and have not had any issues. I was going to replace my blinkers with LED's but ended up with the same style blinker but a 3 wire setup with red lens' in the rear. The have an 8w running light in them for more visibility to other drivers at night. That taillight looks nice, I may have to get one.

I have a new battery. Not sure about the charging system. I'll have to look into testing that. Since Desert-SOHC hasn't had any problems with the headlight while having filament signals and running lights (correct?) I think I'll give it a shot. I'll email DCC just to see what they say. Thanks for the advice, everyone.

A three-pin relay like the one you picked should be OK.  Avoid two-pin relays, their flashing speed depends on the wattage of the bulbs so may be problematic if switching to LEDs.

The make an all electronic 2-pin relay that has an adjustable blink speed for pretty cheap.

I've decided to go ahead and put LEDs in the gauges and idiot lights. I'm confused on if I'll need to install and diodes though? Here is my list.

Oil - (1) LED BA9S-R-120-12V: Red 120 Degree 12V
Neutral - (1) 1 LED BA9S-G-120-12V: Green 120 Degree 12V
High Beam - (1) 1 LED BA9S-B-120-12V: Blue 120 Degree 12V
Turn Signal - (2) 1 LED BA9S-A-120-12V: Amber 120 Degree 12V
Guage lights - (4) 4 LED BA9S-G4-90-12V: Green 90 Degree 12V

On the gauges should I use green or white light?

I have all LED's in my cluster and I could only find 1 bulb that fit, all the others are to tall.

These are the bulbs I went with and in white there is no issues and they are really bright and the gauges are easy to see at night with no glare

Ah, ok I didn't know there was fitment problems. I pulled that list off of here

So, I would need to do some wiring as Calj indicated?

I've also changed my mind on the turn signals. I want to stick to a retro look, so I think more traditional rectangular signals are in order. I was thinking of these.

http://www.dimecitycycles.com/vintage-cafe-racer-caferacer-bobber-brat-chopper-custom-motorcycle-electronic-lighting-parts-mini-aluminum-rectangle-chrome-amber-turn-signals-blinkers-25-8301cm.html

With these, I won't need a relay, correct?

With duel filament, can I wire running lights in the front and brake lights into the signals in the rear?

Do they make a duel intensity LED bulb that I could use in these?

Thanks for the help everyone.

If the electronic flasher relay doesn't say it fixes hyper-flashing then it probably won't. I bought an EP34 3 prong that needed a ground wire, no biggie but the hyper flashing is apparently illegal in some states. It's just supposed to let you know you have a burned out bulb. I just bought this flasher relay for normal flash mode and it works fine for now.

As far as the HELLA lamp on Amazon I didn't see anywhere that it is motorcycle specific. There are lots of lenses that are but make sure. They can usually be had with bulb for around $40ish delivered. Just bought this one and I like it. It's got the euro look. I got the bulb in white.
