Which bike?
« on: August 10, 2015, 06:13:40 PM »
I need help deciding on a bike guys!

It will be used primarily for shooting around town but I definitely want to be able to do 6+ hour camping trips on it.   Only criteria is that it has to be vintage and have a lot of character.

The few bikes I'm considering are:

1981 BMW R65
1970 CL450
1972 CB450
1977 CB400-4
1976 CB750 (I already have a 78 750 project)

and there are a few early 70's CB350's both 2 and 4 and also maybe a cb550.

Help me!

My vote is for the Beemer or the K6.   400's and 450's are too small for touring.

The 350 twin will drive you nuts with vibration.
TTR did around 2K in a month on a 400-4.  last year so it may be ok.
Not sure how bad 450 is for vibration, but it could probably do it.
 Beemer and big fours..no problem

I have an Rd350 and would not take it over a couple hour ride.  Think big bike...

Yea you're right I guess I just want a smaller bike since I already have a 750 in the works.  I want something I can take from Dallas down to Ingram and Wimberly

That looks pretty good and fairly priced, nice stash of spare parts.
Let me know if your truly interested, maybe I could go check it out for you.

There is another 750 for sale in Austin on CL, but it's over priced at $3300.

CB 450 DOHC's are a REALLY fun bike to play with. It's just big enough to run around almost anywhere, they handle pretty good, and you can make them WICKED fast!

I know an RD350 is not a touring bike but I found a MINT one 250 miles away from me for a steal.  Im trying to arrange transportation for it and Ill pick it up if its not too complicated.  If it is Ill keep looking.  Also found a nice cb550 near me for a good price but I keep going back to that R65!

Bah I don't know what to do!  RD350 / BMW R65 / CB750 SS  !?!?

Great deal on a mint RD350 and it would be a blast around Dallas but I wouldn't be able to tour on it…
Decent deal on a R65, has that vintage emotion to it I keep going back to, can tour on it, but not as fun…
Decent deal on a CB750 SS thats fast and fun and can tour on it but I already have a cb750 project...

Yeah, while Iike the CB450 and CB400F, a larger bike would probably be in order. In my much younger days, I did alot of miles on my "modded" CB72 (with 305 bits) and had a blast doing alot of miles, but that was then.

Between the Yamaha, BMW and the Honda 750, I would go with the 750 (I don't have any experience with the BMW, so I can't relate like some folks can. Just me. The RD350s are pretty cool.

So.....what are you going to do?!

:)

Well Im leaving for Michigan tomorrow until next Saturday and whatever is left by then is what I will buy.  I can buy them under my company so I decided Im getting both the RD350 AND the BMW if they are still available.  The RD isn't even advertised so it should be and I can only hope the BMW will be.

Problem solved!!

If it is a CL 450, that is what I would consider the most desireable of the two, as would mosty others, I think. The up pipe is just cool and that's all there is to it. I have a '74 KO that is my daily rider, I often do 100 miles a day or more just for recreation and late night wind chill.

It does have vibration issues, and will drop pieces if you aren't checking everything for torque. This summer I lost three of the tail light screws before I noticed them out, lost a winker lens, and most dangerous was wrapping the brake rod around the axle because the PO used  a wrong bolt to secure the stay.  Last year I lost the collets off the exhaust floret, but of course the floret itself was trapped on the pipe. I have lost bolts on the pegs before.  The exhaust heat sheilds rattle loose regularly, but I can still claim that I have more fun on my $1400 CL than my brother has with his $30,000 swimming pool. and probably exponentially  less maintainence cost.

Find a whole parts bike if you can, after you rob it of parts you can cafe it.
