76 oil tank on a 74 cb750
« on: September 06, 2015, 01:51:40 PM »
I need to switch the oil tank on my 74 cb750.  I have one from a 76 to put on, but there one difference I'm not sure how to handle.  The 74 has a spout on it (circled in red) that the 76 doesn't have.  The spout is connected to the engine (also circled in red).  Has anyone else swapped these types of tanks out?  Can I just attach the hose to the engine and plug the other end?  Any thought's would be great.

Thanks,
Paul

There should be a hose on the 76 that does the same thing. That's for the expansion drain back to the engine.

This is the 76 tank.  The diameter of the outlet on this tank is greater than the one on the engine.

You will need the hose from the '76 tank...........or splice two hoses together. That bottom-vent tube on the K6 is a stand-pipe that ends near the top of the tank. Be sure its a snug fit..........or you will have oil on your tire ;)

You need that hose connecting the oil tank to the crankcase, so don't plug anything. It drains any oil back and I believe also equalizes crank and oil tank pressure. Use an adapter thing thing to go from one size hose to the other and you're good to go.

Maybe easier to source the correct tank? The hose size changed along the way; must have been between '74 and '76.

That drain also helps to feed the auto chain oiler.  Just FYI

Good to know.  I just looked at the 76 and the bit on the engine is the same, but a little bigger. The outlet on the tank is just different.   So yeah, can't plug anything.  Thanks again.
