Aloha! New from Nor Cal
« on: November 30, 2015, 04:18:50 PM »
Hi, All.
I've been lurking for the past couple of weeks as I'm in the beginning stages of wanting to pursue building/rebuilding a bike for the first time (more specifically a late 70's CB750). This site seems to be a great resource and I hope to learn as much as I can from you. And with time, I hope to be able to contribute as well. I'm interested in rebuilding and customizing a bike simply for the process and fun of it; learning and just having a fun side project that lets me work with my hands. I don't currently ride, but have owned and ridden sport bikes for a couple of years about 20 years ago. I've never wrenched on one, and have only occasionally wrenched on a couple of old VW bugs (also about 20 years ago). It's basically all new to me. Call it a midlife crisis, but I just need something to keep my brain and hands moving together and solving things along the way. :P

I'm fairly certain I'll be starting with a '77 CB750 F2 that is in pretty decent shape (still TBD in the next few weeks). I'd be picking it up from a friend who had the same intentions but has a family to keep him plenty busy. I'm wanting to build a bobber style bike; something a little more comfortable than a cafe racer and more cruiser-ish.

I'll be grateful for your support, shared inspirational images/links and words of wisdom along the way.

Welcome to SOHC4. Whereabouts are you in NorCal? I'm in Modesto. There are a few Cal members but I think most are from down south. What kind of bike did you previously ride? When you say sport bikes I think of crotch rockets. I've never owned one or a cruiser. Seems like that's all that you ever see around anymore. I like the cool factor of these old 4's. They are fun to ride, very dependable, and what I used to drool over back in the 70's growing up. You can hardly get 2 blocks down the road without getting a nod, thumbs up, etc. from somebody. You have come to the right place if you  want to work on these bikes. Plenty of friendly, like minded owners to share knowledge and resources. I've been here about 11 years and wouldn't want to be without it. Put up some pictures when you get a chance. I'm more of a K kinda guy but there are lots of members that rock the F's also.

Thanks, MrBreeze! I live in San Mateo and work in San Francisco. In the early/mid 90's I rode an '89 Yamaha FZR. So yes, it was a crotch rocket. Most recently, I used to own a couple of modern Vespas and rode them around the city for a couple of years before moving out of the city and no longer really needed it. They're absolutely perfect for city life, but down in the burbs - not so much. The appeal of the classic CB's has slowly grown on me over the last 3-4 years; especially when I come across some really killer builds that make me think, "That's a Honda CB?!" I'm looking forward to digging in and learning what makes 'em tick. When I finally do secure one, I'll be sure to post photos to share my journey. Thanks again for the welcome!

There are a few members out your way (in the bay area). I grew up in San Jose and lived in Fremont as an adult for a number of years. I can't handle the bay area these days. It's just not the same. Hell...I don't even care for Modesto but at least its close by the mountains which is where I'd rather be. There is some good riding in the Santa Cruz mts. but I really don't have to go that far for better places to ride. Enjoy that Honda when you get it....they are cool bikes. I may get other bikes in my lifetime but don't have any plans to ever unload my 75K.
