My first CB750 build, 1971
« on: October 25, 2015, 12:22:01 PM »
Hi
I had always been in love with older motorcycles, specifically 80 suzuki GS's and early CB's.
Having owned a whole bunch of early GS's, GPZ's and first gen GSXR, i always ended up selling them and moving on.
i wanted something complete, which had potential. Something that i didnt have to cafe just to make sense of it.

Any who, ended up buying a 80 GS1100e earlier this year, a keeper. what i will do with it is for another forum.
However within a month of that i also found a pretty decent CB750.
No i had no idea that earlier CB's had gone that much up in price and rarity, so i wanted to go as far back as i could without being totally ridiculous.
Picked up that 71 CB750, paid more than i should have had .. but its not everyday (at least out here) that you run into a daily rider runner 71 750.
Brought it home from calgary, rode it a few days to find out what was up with it, and then took it all apart.
Now i do have tons of questions, and its really cool to have these forums now which bring a wealth of info and support from the members.
I did a GSXR7/11 a few years back, so this is all after a break.
Went through my storage bins, set up tools, set up work benches, it will be fun.
However i will need lots of help. Glad to be here.

After getting her home, and first thing coming off was the luggage rack and the strangely mounted turn signals. while destroying the tail light bracket :(

Everything slowly came off, engine out.
Read about the laying the frame on its side and lifting off of the engine here ... great tip.
this is how it sits, after i brought it through the car wash to get 44 years worth of grease and grime off, atleast to the point where handling it doesn't require washing your hands immediately after lol.

This was always a pain to put it on and off center stand ... so after cleaning someoff found out the center stand support beam was rotted on one end and shattered.
Always wanted a welder, got that as a birthday present.
Made some reinforcements and new raised stand stops after beating the collapsed beam back into shape.
Had my brother weld it all together since i couldnt yest atleast lol

unfortunately didn't take pics of the damaged frame, but i will post some of the repairs pre grinding and cleaning.
hopefully its good to enough to last another 40.

Welcome from Texas.  Well, you are no Rookie and have wasted no time, good progress so far.

This thread should go in the "Project Shop" section, would get more views over there. You can copy/paste the text.

Copy each post and paste in the Project Shop section.  No need to apologize, no biggie, it would just get seen a lot more over there.
