Fun with an ARD mag.
« on: October 17, 2021, 04:41:49 PM »
I missed the timing the first try and knocked a couple teeth off of the intermediate gear on the starter. 24V spins it like a mixer. I used the paint marks on the mag rotor and found TDC on #1 with a piston stop. I called it a night when I realized I had reversed the firing order rotation when I walked to the opposite side of the engine.  The wires are correct now but I didn't confirm #1 except from memory. I'll take it back off and confirm it tomorrow.
It is throwing a spark now for sure, it's just a matter of timing. #2 carb is leaking too dagnabit.

No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

I updated the drag bike project thread so I don't have to bore you guys with multiple examples of how dumb I can be.

I just read 15 or so pages on the ARD and never did see instructions for an old style ARD/FM mag. I have the printed pages for a late type and they are different.  I'm still unsure the lower drive is all there, two tiny set screws are all that hold the pulley on the shaft?
I see it as a failure as a product with no built in timing wheel in the drive or usable precise timing marks. I've marked my cutdown flywheel and drilled a dyno cover. Am getting close but what a pain.

Thank you for those , I printed them. It's a lot less info than the newer type. My biggest question is the preset at 35* part, the only marks on mine are ones I made myself which seem to be suspect. I'm not racing this beast but it would be awesome to start it at a few car/bike shows and ride it once in a while.

I used to think I was reasonably intelligent and knew a few things about magnetos and engines but this beast fools and frustrates me all of the time. I think an exorcist or medicine man might be called for.  I'd burn some sage but the leaking gas might light up.
All that said, I predict it will run today.  I believe the current timing is closer to 45* so I'll back it off a top tooth before trying again. With 24 volts the mag will light up the timing light, I just need to do the math on the diameter and degrees on what's left of the flywheel/starting clutch.

I marked TDC on the flywheel and using a bit of math marked it approx. 30* advanced. I got the timing light to light directly on the advance mark. Thanks for the help Medyo.

My old school timing mark. (No usable dyno covers were harmed to make this part) Extreme lightening on flywheel, when I got there was no rotor.
