Clutch Springs
« on: November 18, 2015, 10:07:34 AM »
Hello,

So I am going about installing new clutch springs today. I got the Vesrah Heavy Duty Springs (SK-105) for the CB550 1978. My question is, is it normal for new springs to be so high sprung/long? I had to clamp the lifter plate to the other side of the engine to get enough force to compress the springs enough for the bolts to even catch on the thread.

Using the parts guide at Vesrah doesn't show a spring for the 550 available. They look too big to be used in place of those smaller ones.

I found them there finally.

there's this note on the 4into1 site that flybox posted:
*Note: Please check the spring dimensions listed below, some models used different springs for different years. Honda would update the clutch assembly and change the part number for the springs.

you need to measure and/or check your parts list. model years are not always accurate, the engine number and parts list is.

Couldn't agree more. After all the effort done to create this fine collection of Parts Lists, people in this forum still continue to talk in years. It is meaningless and leads to confusion. It is so simple: write down your engine- frame- and carbnumbers and compare it with the list of numbers found in the first pages of the Parts Lists and you know what you have at hand and where to start from. http://www.honda4fun.com/materiale-documentazione-tecnica/parts-list/parts-list-cb550
Then there are several sites where you can simply fill in a found partnumber and with a click can see what other models used that part. The one I consult every now and then is: http://www.motogrid.com/oempartfinder.htm?aribrand=HOM&arian=MOTORCYCLE
So far it never failed me.
