Clutch adjustment question
« on: November 05, 2006, 11:46:51 AM »
I looked through a few of the search results and didn't get the answer i was looking for.

I know how the clutch cable is adjusted. WHat i'm not sure about is which way to adjust the clutch  ???

When the bike is on the centerstand, and i pull in the clutch and put it into first gear the rear wheel starts to turn even with the clutch pulled in all the way.  Not that this is a safety issue, as the bike will not move forward on this pull but it's probably not to good on the clutch.

So do i need to tighten or loosen the clutch cable? and if you could explain why in dummy terms?
\
Thanks
Nate

after looking at another explanation of clutches i think i need to tighten the cable so the clutch will pull completely, therefore eliminating the wheel turning. Is this correct????

That is completely normal, especially when the engine is cold.  As long as you have the correct freeplay at the lever, you are good to go.

The rear wheel turning in neutral when the bike is one the stand can be quite disconcerting.... but as the others have said it is normal. As long as when you stop it from spinning the engine continues to idle as usual!

Yep!!!.....What those guys said!! When you are up on the stand and the wheel is rolling, you could probably stop it from rolling just by grabbing ahold of it.If it grabs you and sucks you into the fender....then you need to adjust your clutch.......Don't try this at home!!!!!

lol, so far it hasn't pulled me under the fender, but i'll watch out for that. The freeplay seems good, so i can just leave it as it stands then. Thanks for the help

If you cold start it in neutral on centerstand and push off, use the rear brake to stop the wheel first...there is enough cold "stiction" in the clutch to stall the motor, even in neutral...

This is an amusing occurrence for onlookers...lol...  ;D

yes! every time I pull out of the parking lot in my building there is somebody just waiting for me to stall as I put her in gear. but once she warms up its all good.

No it doesn't grab enough to stall it or even pull the bike forward. Just enough to turn the wheel on the centerstand
