Frame paint
« on: February 05, 2016, 05:00:59 PM »
What is the correct paint on a stock 750 frame? Is it glossy black or a sort of semi-matte chassis black. This is not a concourse restoration but rather a rattle-can issue.

Rustoleum Gloss is very close to original. It is cheap and repairable. Some insist on using powdercoat.

I have used the DupliColor enamel gloss black fleet coat rattle can paint. It comes in a larger than normal rattle can size and is chemical resistant and pretty tough once it has fully cured.
It does seem to take longer to dry than most of the quick dry spray can formulas. I usually let the frame sit for an extended period while I work on other areas of the restoration.
I would allow a minimum of a few weeks to really let it set up and cure before trying to work on the frame.
I have used this paint on four builds now and really like the toughness and chemical resistant properties. You can tell the way it sprays that there is more material in the paint and do need to be a little careful not to spray too much on as it gives very solid coverage. A little goes a long way in other words.
Common sense.....isn't so common!

Semi Gloss 55% gloss level. It's commonly called PACCAR or Chassis Black and was the preferred shade on most automotive frames and suspension parts.

I used POR15 chassis black Top Coat on bare metal.  Tough stuff with a satin finish.

It depends if you are looking for an original look, or something different. The original paint was a gloss and assure you that it contained a hefty amount of lead. I worked for a Japanese manufacturer and the paint they use today on exposed parts is very tough. The problem is, we could not import the paint for touch ups.

Thank you gentlemen for the information. It never crossed my feeble mind that Japanese paint from 8/70 (date on my bike) might contain lead as I merrily sanded away, breathing the surrounding air in my shop. Oh well, at age 70, lots of brain cells pissed away already.

What level of gloss? Gloss levels are measured from 0-100%. 100% gloss is like a mirror finish.

Just the right amount.

Beemerbum, I think lead is an essential daily nutrient that we have only been lead to believe it isn't. It gives brain cells personality, and a reason to be.

It turns out that a little lead in the head cures jihadism.
