Oil pump stopper valve

I'm changing out my stopper valve seal with Elan's kit and have a question. Which side of the valve does the stopper seal sit in? The valve has a large and a small diameter but the seal fits in either side. The pictures in my shop manual and the Chiltons don't show this difference. Does the seal live in the smaller diameter side and the spring in the larger side or vice-versa? My bad for not paying closer attention on disassembly but you would think it would be noted in the pictures in the manuals.

I wish I remembered, but I found a pic from my disassembly, not sure if you can tell the diff here either. IIRC, when I put it back together, things only fit one way.

I can't really tell from your picture. It looks like the valve is covered in sludge. The pictures in the book don't show the 2 different diameters of the valve. I want to make sure I have this thing in the right position.
Everything looked great.........no metal in oil. There was a small amount of crap in the bottom of pan that is probably 40 years of clutch lining but that should be normal. The only reason for installing the kit is to have higher oil pressure when warmed up. I've read that some bikes hold closer to 60 psi at an idle after full warm up. Mine's around 20.

After abandoning the search function here....I googled Honda 750 oil pump stopper valve and went to images. Several pictures showed the smaller diameter going in first with the stopper seal inserted there. The larger diameter is towards the outside where the spring sits.
This leaves me with 2 questions.
1. Why doesn't the shop manual or the Chiltons show this detail?
2. What happens if it's installed backwards?

OK, I was able to confirm it. I no longer have an extra oil pump (traded for a spark advancer) but I do have the BOTY Franken-O'Digger trophy
Opened it up and that's how it is. Also, instead of looking there in the first place, I remembered Mark's book at the very end. Pix in there show it to be the same way.

Just rebuilt the pump tonight too. Just like in Rafi's photo, stopper was on small end leaving larger for the spring

Hey guys...thanks for looking. At least now if someone does a search on this subject they will run into this post. I still wonder what would it would do if installed backwards although I'm not gonna try it. I'm not "that" curious!!
