Electrical Questions (2) - 78' CB550k
« on: April 01, 2016, 12:27:40 PM »
Hey, just trying to sort out my bike's electrical,

1. With the bike not running but the key left in the on position for a few minutes, should the left side points cover be hot?

2. With the ignition unplugged from the bike, when ringing black to ground (on the plug), should it ring to ground?

Thank you!

1: The left side cover is the alternator, points are on the right. The field coil in the alternator will be on with key on and engine stopped... I don't recall it getting hot but it probably does.
2: The black wire is power from the switch to the bike. Measuring it - switch unplugged - measures the resistance of everything "on" in the electrics - headlight (if always-on), indicators, ignition coils if points are closed... so yes, it will show continuity.
