Best Method to Seal Up CB750 Oil Pan
« on: April 18, 2016, 05:50:34 PM »
One of my oil lines was leaking on my '78 CB750K bike.  So I had them rebuilt and installed them with new o rings where they connect to the engine case.  Dropped the oil pan, cleaned the oil pump screen and pan.  Removed the oil filter housing and replaced the filter, housing o ring and the bolt o ring.  All parts including a new pan gasket from Honda.

My question is, what is the best method to install the oil pan with the new gasket so as to prevent oil leaks.  I have HondaMan's book and he suggests using Hondabond 4 on shoulders of the bolts as some of them are exposed to oil.  He also suggests a specific torque and I have a torque wrench (inch pounds) to handle that.  Do I use any gasket sealer on either side or both sides of the new Honda gasket?  I would really like to get this right.  Thanks for your help.

Tom

Sealer should not be necessary on the gasket surface or the bolts. It will create a bigger mess should you take it off. 6mm bolts 7 - 9 ft lbs torque usually. Alternate side to side when tightening the bolts. Snug at first then torque them.

You may want to upgrade and use a larger head oil filter bolt and do NOT over tighten it. That's trickier than the pan stuff.

MF''r,

Thanks for the response and advice.  I just didn't know if anyone used gasket sealer or not.  My bike already has the massive headed bolt to secure the filter housing.  Some gorilla had applied way too much torque to it.

Thanks.

I am a cheap ass, more often than not I use just Hondabond - or equivalent - and no gasket to seal the oil pan.

I've always just used a gasket, in fact I never have needed to add extra goop on any of the engine gaskets, and only would if there were mating surface damage.

Soak the pan gasket in oil for a few hours.  Let it swell.  Wipe it near dry before you set it on the pan.
Use ARP, or some other non hardening thread sealant and coat the threads of all screws/allen heads before install.
Hand tight.  Just wipe any excess sealant off the screws.
