Thanks for chiming in on the oil discussion, Frank. Was it the Lucas oil or additive that caused slippage? I understood it was the TB Zinc-Plus additive that they were talking about in that thread. But maybe their oil does the same thing... More research required.

PS What oil do you run?

My little treasure find today:


I knew I didn't want to put the stock fender between the GSX-R forks. But I found a fender today at the local bike wrecker. It's shorter than the stock fender, and sits on different mounts. I think it has potential. I'm guessing it's from an early '80s DOHC; well, I know it's from a DOHC, just don't know what vintage (there was no tank, seat, etc.) But the fender on this looks close: http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/Honda/honda_cb750f_80.htm. Anyway, for $20, it cleaned up nice (I always forget to take 'before' pictures...) Now to figure out how to mount it.

It's been a while, but I just got back from four weeks of work overseas... When I got back I was stoked to find that the hub I ordered from Cognito Moto had arrived! My excitement quickly evaporated when I found that my rotors won't fit the mounting holes.   So I'm writing to see if anyone has used a '96 GSX-R750 front end for a conversion before, and what kind of 'bolt Pitch Circle Diameter (PCD)' you have.

Sam's Fork Chart shows the 96-99 GSX-R750 with a bolt PCD of 91 mm (same as the TL1000S/R, Hayabusa (99-07), GSX-R1000 K1-K2, GSX-R600 96-00, GSX-R600/750 K0-K3; basically any Suzuki with a 320 mm rotor [which is what mine measures]).

Guess I'm going to have to write to Devin and see what we can sort out... The bummer is, I'm in Canada so shipping is going to be a drag. <sigh> I was kind of hoping to get it rolling before the snow fell. I don't think that's going to happen now.

Well, I got my hub sorted out (thanks, Devin!), and then left the country for a month (I work overseas)... But I'm finally back at 'er, and motivated to get this thing done! The snow is gone and the street sweepers won't be far behind! A few more Wednesday night hockey games and Saturdays at the ski hill and then it will be time to shift 'seasons' for good. Add to that my daughter asking, "Dad, are you going to get the bike ready to ride this summer? I'd really like a ride!" and the excuses just lose their punch.

So I laced my front wheel last night (three times [don't ask]):

Those who are wondering how to lace a CognitoMoto hub, pay attention to the short and long bend spokes: the short bend spokes stay close to the hub while the long bend ones pass behind/inside of them. One other tip: put all the spokes in the hub at the beginning, alternating short and long on each side--you won't be able to get the rest of them in after you've laced a round or two of spokes... Do it right and this is what you'll end up with:

So with the Cognito Moto hub, you can't run the stock speedo drive. I knew that when I started this build, but I'm still thinking there's got to be a way to use it! Stubborn, I am...
The other day I stumbled on this:

Anyone want to tell my why something like that wouldn't work? Or am I going to run into serious 'ratio' issues? If the stock ratio is 2240:60 on a 19" wheel, is there any way to calculate a different ratio? Or, to ask the question another way: is there any chance of rigging the speedo drive unit to run off a different 'surface' (e.g., rear sprocket [as above], rim of front brake disk)?

I'm just brainstorming right now, so any input would be welcome!

British bikes run the speedo off the rear. I just picked up some Rickman CR kit parts and the the wheels have a snout that takes a stock Honda speedo, except it has been bored out to take a bigger axle. It runs on the right side with the disc. I suppose you could rig one to be the spacer from your drum hub to swingarm. Probably be pretty easy to bore one out on a lathe. Mine is cracked from my kit so I will be doing the same on a stock Honda unit.

Are you running disc on rear, we could try to do what Willi suggested.. the el cheapo trick is...bicycle speedo..

Thanks for the replies. I read about the Rickman rear speedo drive, but couldn't find any info on it. No rear disc--just two up front. I found a new VDO X1 bicycle speedo at a garage sale last year for $2, so that's my fall-back. I've also got a GPS that I could stick somewhere... But I'd like to figure out a way to keep the stock speedo, even just for the odometer. I'll keep thinking around it.
