Leaking peacock cb550
« on: April 30, 2016, 06:16:25 AM »
First time posting on the forum so forgive me if this post is in the wrong place!
I have a 1974 cb550 and the Petcock is passing fuel in the off position. I've replaced the wavy washer and the rubber seal inside the peacock with the 4 holes in it but it's still passing fuel - about a tablespoon or two per day.

What am I missing?  What else could cause this thing to leak?
Thanks in advance!

This was mine from my 76 when I rebuilt it. Yours may be different but I thought I remember hearing that if that cone shaped piece is worn then it will cause a leak. Did you take the petcock all the way apart?

What type of petcock are you guys talking about? The oldstyle one with the bowl or the newer type with the nylon filter on top?
I remember a similar question not that long ago on the German forum. What's a peacock got to do with it?

Ha. Probably leaking bc it's too busy strutting around.

Or the feathers are getting in the way?!

On a serious note, I've had bad luck rebuilding them.  I now just spring for a new one for around $50.  Dont buy the cheap China knockoffs though.

A tablespoon worth of fuel leakage is considerably less than the leaking my fuel valve does!

What is it about these things they just lose their mojo :(

Do the new single outlet valves still use the same plastic cone design?

Could it be That you dont have the small washers  ( 2 x ) under the 2  screws that mount petcock to the tank. ..?
Then it Will leak like described

 8)
Ive been there :).
