Can I have honourary membership status? :)
« on: November 15, 2006, 07:51:26 PM »
Rip off the bandaid - I sold my CB550F.  After 10 years and 3 SOHC's, I finally had a nice looking, running CB550F.  2 engine rebuilds went into this bike, the last one being completed just a couple of weeks ago.

As luck would have it, I stumbled across someone looking for any Honda SuperSport.  I emailed them with both my 550 and 750 (the Turbo) suggesting the 750 was a really interesting bike considering all the period-correct go-fast bits installed by the original owner, whom I bought the bike from.

He focussed in on my 550, as he had recently sold his and liked the smaller bikes.  He also wanted a runner, not a project.  Push come to shove, he made me a very fair offer for the bike and I let it go!  OI!

So, technically I still own an SOHC - the 750F with the Rickman fairing and Rajay/ATP turbo.  It's not running, and I'm parting it out.  You'll see a near-perfect Sunrise Orange CB750F tank and seat on eBay shortly, as well as the sidecovers (which are cracked but worth repairing considering their rarity).

The Turbo kit with the boost gauge and fuel pump will come off next.  The rest of the bike is going to a friend to play with.  All it would need is an exhaust, carbs/pods and a seat and tank to get going again.  Only 18000 miles on the engine.

I sold the bike on Sunday, and already have another bike in my sights.  It's a BMW however  :o  A 1975 R75/6 with 35,000 miles on it, which as some may know, is very low for a BMW airhead.  If you can believe it, it sat in a dealership for 20 years until the current owner bought it 4 years ago.  It's near showroom perfect with everything original.

While I may have another project in the future, for the moment I'm going to focus my time on riding and spending more time with my family than the bike  ;)  Just for now though!

Here's a pic of the 'dark side'.  Hope to have it in its new home Saturday afternoon.

Just to clarify - yes, the intakes for the carbs (which are not black rubber boots - they're stiffer material - plastic like) go into the upper rear section of the 'engine' case.  A single screw and the case splits to reveal the air filter (apparantly).

Dead easy to work on - no cutting up your 750 frame to access the valve train :)  Allan head bolts everywhere from the factory.

Here are the rest of the pics.  For those curious about $$$, it cost me $1,000 on top of my 550F sale.

As is always the case, the pictures look better than real life, but bottom line is the bike is clean and original.  Only odd thing is the rear rim appears to be alloy, while the front rim looks exactly like my old 550's.  Its a DID steel chrome rim.  Not sure what the scoop is there.  Perhaps something went wrong with the front rim some decades ago.

The bike was likely traded into the dealer back in the late 70's early 80's, which is where it sat till 2002.  They freshened it up with NOS correct fuel lines (braided material of some form), fork seals etc.

Typical BMW engineering - twin petcocks - one per carb.  But, there is a cross over fuel line that runs through the engine casing so if one side of your tank runs dry, the carb gets it's fuel from the other side :)

Single clutch plate - dry.  Instant hook up.  Great suspension too.

This was a kind of fateful buy.  I noticed this guy's ad for the bike back in late September.  Sent it to my brother who has an R75/7 for his opinion.

At the time, my bike was in peices in the middle of engine rebuild #2.  Then shortly after rebuilding the engine, while not considering selling at all, someone makes me a very generous offer for the 550.  I sell it (last Sunday).  I then begin looking in earnest for it's replacement, and call the guy with this BMW.  He makes me a generous offer well below his posted asking price.  I went tonight (Thursday) and am picking the bike up Saturday.

Here are the pics - check out the tool kit  :o and the air pump (last pic).  There's a drop-cloth for keeping drips off your marble garage floor as well - from BMW.

I'll post pics soon (this weekend).  It's pretty near perfect - original Sunrise Orange paint with all the striping and badges.  Seems to be perfectly clean on the inside (should be flushed out but no rust from what I can see).

See my gallery for pics of the CB750F Turbo.  That's the bike I'm parting out.

Nothing wrong with BMW's mate, I've got a K1100LT for winter riding (too hot behind the fairing for hot Ausie summers) and I've owned an R69S, a K100RT and an R100RS.

My brother had two R75's like that one, great bikes for sure (much nicer and smoother than the bigger twins) and strong too. I "T Boned" a car with one when I was 18, and apart from bent forks and a smashed fibreglass front fender, it was ridden from the scene, whereas the car had to be towed!

BMW's work so well they're kinda bland, so get yourself another SOHC4 as a project, to put some excitement back into your life! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

Single clutch plate - dry.

Nice Beemer.  Now you get to experience spline lubes.  You might ask the seller if it has ever been done.

The dealer gave the bike an entire tune-up 4 years ago when it was bought there.  New fuel lines, fork seals etc.  I can't confirm however the specific details, and will ensure proper lubrication before riding.  My brother just finished a frame-up restoration of an R75/7 so I have a good source of info there.

His site: http://members.shaw.ca/canadadan/re-birth.htm

What's the big deal with spline lubes?  Haven't read up on it, but people make a big deal about having had it done.  Is it that complex?

For those curious - I got CAD$3,100 for my 550F.  Makes me tear up when I look at the picture  :-[  I liked the bike alot and rebuilt the engine twice.  Had 1 year old Pirelli Sport Demons on it and a 50 mile old Dyna Ignition.  And new sprockets and chain as well.

Needless to say I didn't make money on the bike, but hey, who does?  I still got a nice amount of $ for it so I'm not complaining.  I paid a good chunk for the BMW as well, but it's pretty unique and is perfectly complete.  Apparantly the tool kit can fetch $200 so if I get tired of eating Kraft Dinner I can always sell that  ;)

Oh and I have another complete Sunrise Orange setup for the 550F as well.  Tank and sidecovers.  Sidecovers are as close to NOS as you'll get without them being NOS (one was - I bought it from Western Hills Honda).  The tank isn't pefect, but it's close.  Clean inside too.

Also will be putting up my customzied CB550F 'bump seat' I made, and some other bits like Bronze swingarm bushings etc.  Stuff that never made it onto the bike.

While most people have the online copy, I'll also be selling my original Honda 550 Service Manual and Parts Manual.  You'll see a flood of auctions from me on eBay soon enough.  I need the extra cash to pay the difference in the bike cost and the extra insurance - 550 to 750 is about $200 extra a year.

No, not complex.  There is a fair amount of disassembly involved.  Carbs, airbox, tank and swingarm pivots, etc.  There is plenty of info and how-to directions online.  You will become aquainted with the writings of gentleman called Snobum.  It is important that it gets done.  The problem is corrosion of the splines on the tranny input shaft that engage the clutch plate.  They rust and the splines go away.  One fine day you give it the gas and you no go.  All preventable with the occasional spline lube.

The first time I did a spline lube on my GS, it took four hours.  The last one a couple of months ago took an hour and half and I was in no hurry.

Tim,

Traitor  :o, gone to the dark side hunh?

Seriously though, the airheads are great bikes.  You should see them perform at the vintage races.  And you can always CAFE them.  I have a buddy with an R90 that has ove 216,000 MILES on it now, and still goes strong.  Great bikes.  This one is a keeper, don't sell it (but if you do, remember I am just in Milton so you can drop it off easy ;D)
