Start the engine and attach a volt meter to the battery then watch the voltage as you rev the engine up to 3-4k rpms. At near idle speeds the voltage will likely be around 12, but as you get to highway speed rpms the voltage should rise to 13.5-14. Anything under 12.5 or so at speed and you may have trouble maintaining a charge on your battery depending on the ignition style, coil type and any electric accessories you might have.
