750 clutch adjustment question
« on: June 05, 2016, 04:02:19 AM »
I have a 73 750 and I have the clutch adjusted by backing off the cable and setting the lock nut and screw as per manual.  It is when I adjust the cable is when I have the question.  If I adjust the cable when the engine is hot and have the proper play at the lever,  but when cold the cable is tight at the lever.

If I adjust the cable when cold, the lever has a lot of play when hot.  It does seem to shift ok however I adjust it.
.
I like it best when I adjust it hot, because the play at the lever suits my hand.

My 550 does not act this way, or any other cable clutch bike I have owned.

I know heat causes metal to expand, but this seems excessive.   Am I worried for nothing?

PS 20w-50 motorcycle oil,  no slipping and comes off from stationary with no problem.

That sounds like a strange issue... Did you also set the clutch actuator adjustment on the engine?

^^^^ That^^^^^

Adjust the clutch under the cover according to manual.  The handle screw is for fine tuning it.

Yes, it is strange.  I did loosen the cable and then set the lever under the cover.  I went back to setting the cable when the engine was cold.  It does get more slack or play at the lever end when warmed up.  The clutch does work correctly,  no creep when stopped and it does shift ok for 43 year bike.
I was curious if it was normal for 750s.
