1971 CL350 Craigslist find

his popped up on Craigslist, was fairly close and stupid cheap....almost free. And you know what they say about free bikes and free kittens!!

It was listed as a '69 CL350 but if I decoded the VIN correctly it's actually a '71. The tank matches the '71 shape and color, too.




 There's no title (yet), but we have a "barn find" law in SC and I've been 100% successful with it so far.
 The seller said he's actually ridden the bike. It kicks over with excellent compression and the carb slides and butterflies are free. That's about all I've done with it so far.

 The tank is solid with a couple of dings....but of course it has a failing Kreem liner in it. No problem; dealt with that before. I'll strip that out and test for leaks. If it needs lining again, I'll use POR-15 or Redkote, both MUCH better than Kreem.
 
 I can't really test the control cables until I get some handlebar controls.....should I just go ahead and replace them?
 And why, oh why, do people insist on cutting the wires from the controls!?!? The LH control is easy to find new. Does anyone have a source for the RH control that isn't NOS Honda ($$$)? I'll be checking the classifieds for used stuff, too.
 
 It has pods....they appear to be K&N...and I've heard that the stock filters are preferred, but this is what I have to work with. I'll check jetting when I get into the carbs and report back. I'll also go through the forks, brakes, etc.

 It has less than 3900 original miles.



 And the pipes and mufflers are in VERY good shape. Above average, I'd say, since the mufflers always seem to rust out.



 Better pics to come once I get it out of the van. I'm not even unloading it tonight; I'm going straight to the DMV tomorrow to get the process started. This one will be for my GF. She hasn't ridden in years and is a little cautious about getting back on a bike. She likes the way this one looks and the size, both physically and engine cc wise, is a good fit for her. And big enough for me to ride if she decides she doesn't like it. :)

 These are some parts that I already know I need. Looking for good usable stuff....doesn't have to be show quality.

* LH and RH side covers, preferably with emblems. The LH needs to be the scooped cover for the scrambler pipes.

* Air filter "rod" and nuts to hold on said covers.

* LH and RH controls. I already have some with the wires cut.....good wires, please.

 That's about all I can think of right now. Can anyone help me out?

Also, the metal air boxes and the rod are the same as for the CB350's.

Good luck finding emblems..
The correct emblems were only used for that year on the CB/CL350's.

(My CL came missing the side covers and airboxes as well.)

Odd you can't see the images I posted over at Twins.
Anyway, these are the correct side covers for a '71 CL350.
Joe (FrankenFrankenstuff) made these for me.
I'm sure he can make you a set as well if you can't find any suitable used covers.

And if I don't care about "correct", as far as the exact design, color or emblem goes, will any of the CB/CL350 side covers fit on my '71 CL? Both RH and LH sides?
 The CB350 side covers  from ~'69-70 look to be identical to the correct CL covers for my bike.

I'm using the parts fiche to see what number and what other models I can cross reference for a gas cap O-ring and the tank badges for my '71 CL350 K3.

 The picture and #'s at Motogrid don't look at all like what I have. I even looked at the K0-K2 models.

 They show a screw on cap and different badge arrangement. What's the correct part # for the gas cap seal? What tank badges do I need and what other models used them? They are the screw on badges, mounting holes about two inches apart.

That looks like the same fuel cap that they have on the K4,I would get a cap rubber seal for the K4.

 Yes, I found out that the seal is the same as the 550/750 etc.

 The tank badges are more rare....only on a couple years of CL175 and CL350.

 Got it out of the van today for a better look. I'm really stoked about how solid the exhaust is. It's worth more than I paid for the bike! I have no doubt that it will clean up extremely well with some elbow grease, chrome polish and 0000 steel wool.



Just wiped off with some spit.



What is the threaded hole for just in front of where the side cover goes?




 It seems that every hanger, etc., is all there. There's even a drain tube still attached to one of the mufflers!

 Gonna need fork seals, but I have those, some O-ring sets for the carbs and a few other odds and ends on the way. A member on the Honda Twins site REALLY hooked me up with literally ALL of the parts I'm missing: side covers, air filters and lids/hardware, handle bars with controls and more.

 I REALLY hate Kreem. I think I've seen maybe ONE tank lined with Kreem that wasn't failing.



 I got a little scare when I saw some pimples on the tank. Took a little sandpaper to it and I think I'll be OK. I also picked up some acetone and will get the old Kreem liner out tomorrow. If....IF...I need to reline it, I'll use POR-15 or Redkote. I've had good luck with both, especially the POR-15.



 I'll keep it bare metal inside if it's solid and I can get it clean enough. If I DO have to line it, I'll have a couple of dings pulled out first. There's this one and a larger but shallower one on the other side. That's about it. It's in pretty good shape overall.

That threaded hole is for the front half of the factory clamp that holds both head-pipes tight.

 Worked on the bike for several hours today. Gave it a good de-greasing and a Simple Green bath. The engine is one of the least greasy/oily/grimy engines I've ever started with. I hope that's a good sign
 I also started working on getting the Kreem out of the tank. Did I mention that I hate Kreem? In addition to a big pile of failed liner that came out, I got several large swathes and this chunk. It's almost two inches thick in one area. And one of the cross over tubes was plugged.




 The gas cap latch broke while I was working on it, too. I think I have another in my CB550 parts, but it looks like it doesn't matter.....
 Remember those pimples on the tank? I think that's where the lump of Kreem was and, the more I soaked it with Acetone and sloshed around the chain and screws, the more obvious it became that I had a problem. :(



 The blue tape is one inch long.


 There's also a pinhole underneath that I could have easily repaired, but the "shotgun blast" of holes up front means this tank is now wall art. Oh, well.....anyone have a decent CL350 tank for sale?

Also pulled the carbs. Not bad at all inside. No varnish or gummy stuff. Just the powdery ethanol crap. Each carb, bowl and brass bits spent ~1-1.5 hours in a bucket of Berryman's Chem-Dip (my bucket is over 20 years old and will still curl your nose hairs. I still reek of it, even though I wore gloves). The carb tops and floats went in a Simple Green/water mix.
 All of this was followed with water, carb cleaner, fine steel wool and compressed air.
The diaphragms are great and only the emulsion tubes has a little gunk on them.



 I can't get them fully back together until the O-rings show up. I did notice that the choke plates seem to be out of sync. Is there a procedure to match them up? The RH carb choke is still partially open when the LH choke is closed.



 And when the chokes are open, they're still not even.



 I could also use the factory settings and jet sizes for these carbs if anyone has them. 1971 CL350 K3 with 3D carbs and engine # CL350E-3104283.
