1977 750F Oil Cooler
« on: August 08, 2016, 03:29:57 PM »
I got this used oil cooler that I was told he fits a 1977 750F.
1) Does it fit a 1977 750F?
2) How do I install it?
3) How would I mount it on the bike? No real place for it.
4) Is it worth installing?

This looks like a oil cooler with adapter plate. One was installed on a new '78 model I'm working on. There should be a hollow bolt that threads into the engine block then you would thread your existing oil filter bolt into it. Adds about an inch the the front of the motor with that adapter plate installed. It routes the filtered oil up through that radiator and back out. Most of the time oil coolers are installed just above the exhaust pipes on the front edge of the frame. You would need to make some kind of bracket to attach it to the bike. That little radiator needs to be facing the oncoming wind while driving.

Yes I have the Bolt you speak of.
Do Oil Coolers make a big difference?
Worth the trouble of installing?
Is one a in port and one a out port?

It does make a difference. Perhaps some people who have them installed and ride with them can chime in more because I haven't. That project I spoke of is in the works. Installing isn't really that hard. If you really wanted to do the quick and cheap route, you could buy rubberized P clamps that match the front frame rails and run to bolts through the top edge to secure it in place. That's how the one came installed on the bike I have. It's not the prettiest, but looked functional. One port is in and one is out.

I've been running a Lockhart Oil Cooler on my 750 K6 since it came out of the box in 1976.

It does help, especially in warmer weather.

As far as mounting goes, if the "radiator" has a tab type bracket on the top edge, you can mount the radiator under the horn on the same frame tab.  That is how mine is mounted.
