Kick only
« on: August 16, 2016, 09:35:18 PM »
So what can I eliminate if I'm wanting to run ignition switch and kick only? Maybe I'm not fully understanding the concept of running a kick and a starter. If I eliminate the starter does that eliminate the gold plate mess inside of the timing case on the right side of the bike?

Thanks guys!  ::)

No, the electric starter and the ignition system are two completely different things.

Not to sound cross...but if you don't know what something is, or why it's part of your machine.  You may want to remove more information from the manual first.

I run kick only a la calj737.  Then when no one is looking I "could" still push the starter.  Search electronic ignition swap if you want to get rid of the points.
Also, what kind of bike have you got?  Are you looking for a stock or custom look?  What work has been done, what do you plan on doing?  If you want to get crazy (and are comfortable with wiring/electrics) and just clean up the bars you could relocate the starter button.  If you're looking to eliminate the battery (or go with a super small one) search that thread, I'm sure there's some good thoughts on both sides of the discussion.  Definetley some limitations and a custom wiring harness.

I thought a battery was needed for a load so that the voltage regulator / rectifier would operate properly????

Ooo thanks for the link CalJ!  I always liked batteryless two stroke quads.  Maybe if I ever build a track bike I'd do that.

Oh yeah sorry should add some details, yeah is a 550k0 Ive got the motor out and the rest of the frame is tore down. I'm doing a full restoration on it as it needs it and the previous owner couldn't confirm the state of the motor. So yeah a custom build I guess. Especially since the oil had a putrid amount of gas in it. I'm rebuilding the motor yes and don't want a starter for the fact that I don't find it appealing as I don't consider a bike from the 70s being a modern machine.

My 550 was fine after being neglected for 15 years.  Did many oil changes in the first three months after waking it up.
Worst issue I had to deal with were worn out rocker shaft bores.  THAT issue, can make it seem like valves are noisy and out of adjustment.  Though you swear they were dialed in just yesterday.

Electric Start is a period correct accessory on these bikes.

I hear that, just not my thing I guess. But that's nuts I've heard these motors can take a hell of a beating and still haul it.

If you feel like posting some Picts start a build thread!  I'm interested in seeing where you go with it!
