adding tank stripes after paint Q?
« on: September 06, 2016, 11:37:30 AM »
I've got a sweet perfect planet blue paint job on a 750 K2 but with no stripes, it's been painted for years. Are there problems associated with putting stripes over older paint and how imortant is a clear coat over them?
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

Should be no problem at all.   If the stripes are pigmented vinyl, there is not really a need to clear coat - you can always replace them if they start to show wear.   If the striped are printed, they are more susceptible to scratching etc.  Sometimes printed decals are printed with a clear.

Or, you can scuff the tank with 600, apply the stripes and then re-clear it.

What kind of stripes are they ?
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

K2 reproduction, proably from CBdecals.com. I'm doing a K0 too but it will be with a paint job. I might be a rebel and use the 72 stripes on both bikes. The pearl white added into the stripe really sets it off.

If the tank has been painted for years and you use newer clearcoat just be sure all the chemicals get along well with each other. Not a good time to discover a bad reaction.

That's my concern, I have no idea who painted it. I did learn tonight the PO of this bike was buddies with the PO of my drag bike project. There may yet be a picture or at least an eye witness.
