Ahoy from NOLA.
« on: September 17, 2016, 09:10:02 PM »
Greetings to all you fine folks. Just picked up an old SOHC 76 CB550F today. So, I figure I'll be spending some time here when it comes time to start going through it. I've previously rebuilt my '70 CB350 Twin, and finishing up a rebuild on my buddy's '74 CB350Four. I'm also doing a quick project on an '82 C70 Passport for my lady at the moment.

As for the new albatross I picked up today:

Louisiana is hard on – well, lots of things – but particularly anything metal. This one had been an aborted cafe-racer project that ended up sitting for 4 years (no knowing what it was doing before that). The engine is locked up tight, wheels are shot, uni pods literally disintegrated! But it's mostly intact, and they didn't get around do doing any structural modifications. Not pictured is the original tank, side covers, bars, controls, and exhaust,  a spare set of Keihin carbs, stock airbox, grab-bar, front fender, a set of leather panniers, and a clean title. I feel it was a pretty decent grab for $300 bucks. It'll probably hang out a bit while we finish up these other projects, but I'm really looking forward to getting into this one when the time comes.

I only got into bikes a couple years ago and am still/always learning, but I really love the process - I enjoy the discipline of working on bikes and I'm really into the history of these old Hondas. Happy to be here.

Cheers!

Welcome to the group . . . I live in Bossier City.  Looks like you have a good project and there's plenty of people around here that can help.

Pull the plugs and carbs and fill the cylinders with a mix of acetone and ATF. Let soak. May free up the motor.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. If ya'll are interested, I'll post progress photos here: http://imgur.com/a/M5ITu - though it'll probably be another month or two finishing up my buddy's 350F before I can really get into this one, but I sized it up today and gave it a preliminary wipe-down and going over and I'm feeling excited. This'll be a fun build.

Heeeeey, I know that bike!!!! Project Jasper: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,23634.0/all.html

Did you ever get it running?

Quote
Polishes up real nice. And I gotta hand it to the PO, they actually did a real nice job on the knee scallops. I know it's original, but I don't think I'm a fan of orange...

The tank and side covers were originally blue. Carla painted the tank black with flames. Later, we stripped the tank and had it painted orange.

The backstory for the orange:

I had it painted at Dixon Correctional Institute. Inmates work at the body shop there. I helped with the knee dents on the tank and I did the electrolysis on the tank  http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,21623.msg244775.html#msg244775. I believe I coated the inside of the tank, too. I had nothing to do with chopping the fenders. The lady you got the bike from did that.

Small world, it's nice to see a bike resurface with someone new like this. Too bad all of the old photo links are dead. I recently downloaded all of my photobucket photos and deleted the account.

Welcome!
