Sandcast engine preferences/ cool engine pics./ magneto talk
« on: November 21, 2016, 08:08:03 AM »
When I purchased a group of neglected bikes, I stumbled across this sandcast engine #2695. I don't plan to build a bike around it but think it should be used in a restoration by someone. It had a K5 head and cylinder, I purchased a Sandcast head and cylinder, already had a valve cover and believe I have many correct engine covers. (except a 9 bolt clutch cover)  I'm working on cosmetics like bent and chipped fins and cleaning things.
Anyway the question is, as a purchaser would most guys prefer to rebuild this engine themselves or would you prefer to buy one already rebuilt and ready to roll? My thought is most guys that are serious restorers will want to get inside, check it out and make those decisions themselves anyway.
As far as determining price, I don't want to be the guy asking how much can I squeeze out of the next guy?  I think I'll ebay it and let the market decide. I always end up either having guilt because I asked too much or sellers remorse because I sold too cheap.

I would prefer a non-restored/rebuild not-painted SC engine with correct 9 hole clutch and slim lip alternator cover.

I think if you want to build a 15 K plus  bike from the 70,s , you want to know what is inside it, and who did the work.
I got really good money fro my sandcast , without starting it up.. I figured after the long sleep..why start it , if its coming apart anyway...

I see no problem with a clean, organized, bike in a basket.

Thanks for the opinions, I'm going to install every correct part I can lay my hands on and clean it up pretty. Torque nothing just bolt it all together. It would look good on one of those sheet metal engine stands off Ebay. I'll make a shipping crate for it too.

Is it too late to say that it's worth whatever the market is willing to pay? Years ago a set of sandcast cases would go for a couple of thousand but recently I saw a complete bottom end go for a few hundred, so who knows, maybe collectors have moved on? eBay will decide...... ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Very true Terry, the one on ebay with the hole in the sprocket area went up to $2550. It didn't sell, now it's listed for a buy it now at $2200 and seems to be sitting there. It just seems selfish to keep it if there's a bike that needs it somewhere.
My first thought was keeping it as an art piece. I could bend up a stand made like a bike frame and tig it together. A stand with a pretty engine over a twin reverb Fender amp would be the ultimate collector piece for me. I even have carbs and an airbox for it.
And who knows when a proper frame might come along, a hoarders excuse. L0L!

I got a cylinder block from a bike stripper in Wisconsin, that was a couple weeks ago. That's the sandcast motor that I found in a 75 frame. I'm still looking for one for my 14,100 K0 bike.

And if you go to a wrecker dont ask for one just tell him you would like to pick thru the 72 and older heads.

One day I said to a wrecker with lots of 750 stuf..got any two hole rear hubs.. He said yrah i got a few but more with the four holes.. Then he said what is the difference ?... Whupps.. Wont do that again..

I bought a complete top end off a K0 that the seller had advertised on ebay as an F2 top end, because someone had painted it black. He also didn't notice the cylinders had been bored out for the RC 836 pistons, or the RC 315 cam, or even notice that the head had been ported and was fitted with bigger valves and HD springs. For $100 bucks plus shipping, I was pretty happy.......... ;D

Don't rebuild it, sell it off so someone can build their dream bike.   The question is, what is the value? $3K?

Its a magneto...self contained, will run with no battery..
A distributor, needs a coil and I would think a battery..

Been waiting 30 years to be able to get/find some of the goodies..I have lusted after since I was your age.
