Sure would be nice if they published the specs on these exhausts
« on: February 13, 2017, 04:36:34 PM »
I picked up a set of repro 4 in 4 exhausts for my CB550.  Since I don't have the stays I have to manufacture them.  I have the stays made, but whoever made the exhaust didn't include nuts for the bolts that are embedded in the muffler.

I guessed based on my micrometer - figuring it was a standard 8mm.  NOPE!  So now I have to run to the hardware store to pick up a selection of nuts to see which one it is.
8mm fine pitch?
5/16"?
5/16 fine pitch?

It is for a Japanese bike, so I am making a big assumption that it's metric, but 8mm 1.25 pitch (standard) was close but no cigar.

The other wrinkle - the upper pipe uses a 10mm bolt, but they included the nut for that ???
Why use 2 fine pitch 8mm bolts on the lower pipe and a single 10mm standard pitch bolt on the upper.  Beats me.

You have a mcrometer but cant measure pitch? Just use a caliper or ruler and count.
Mm is .040 for this exercise..
1.5 mm pitch is very near to 16 tpi... Or use loose bolts you have to compare pitch.

Where did you find these repros? Are they for pre 77 K or later?

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

I really just wanted to gripe.
For as much as they sold the kit for, you think they could have thrown in 2 bucks worth of hardware.

But I will say this - it ain't 8mm 1.25 or 1.0 pitch.  it's not 5/16 x18 or 24 either.
My solution - they chrome the plated the bolts with messed up the threads, I'm going to recut them with an 8mm x 1.25 pitch die and be done with it.

Nope.  Definitely 8mm x 1.25 pitch.

I recut the threads and they were all junked up with chrome plating.

Looks like I'm going to have a busy weekend putting the new pipes on.
