I use ATF, check your manual for the specific amount.

I use ATF for stock replacement, but a nice little upgrade is cheap 10w40. 6oz is stock....but I'm 240lbs so I do 8oz of 10w40 personally.

ATF is fine, but you really shouldn't use engine oil since it has cleansers and modifiers in it that you don't want in your forks. Why not just buy the proper oil (fork oil) for the job? In the whole scope of motorcycle maintenance, its pretty cheap, and you can also adjust suspension characteristics with different weights.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

Automatic transmision oil is a ekstra fine/robust hydralik oil..and absolut fine for fork operations.
.its just a bit thin for old veared forks.
.so often it needs adt a  bit thiknes by some 20 hyd oil.. fork oil is abaut sae 10..( atf is also abaut sae 10..)....
