Brown w/Blue Stripe Question
« on: April 01, 2017, 12:41:40 PM »
It sounds like (from your first post) that the instrument cluster wires are unplugged. The double BLACK is used to feed power to the OIL, NEU lights, and the HORN. The BROWN/BLUE is the horn buzzer power wire and is completely unnecessary to start the bike.

Cal,

I found the Brown w/Blue Stripe on the diagram which indicates that it is connected to the turn signal switch, and I located the buzzer on the bike.  The wiring from the buzzer goes into the headlight bucket.  With the bike running the buzzer sounds when turning on the turn signals.

Now the unknown.  After changing the handle bars and re-installing the controls, I have under the gas tank a Brown w/Blue Stripe with a male fitting.  I cannot find a corresponding female fitting for this wire.  One possible clue is I don't have a tail light when the bike is running.  In Park the tail light works.

Thanks,

The ignition switch on my '76 550f went bad and the rear tail light was intermittent at best ( often just didn't work.)  Once I replaced the switch, the tail worked properly.  Just suggesting it's another possibility your tail light isn't working.  I don't know what bike you've got, but I recall seeing the same wire in the box under the tank not hooked to anything.  I left the buzzer in place bud didn't connect it in the headlight bucket.  Could be the bulb went bad, too..

The two shouldn't be "connected" in that the tail light has nothing to do with the buzzer UNLESS the previous owner decided to "merge" the two. Which would be really weird. So, your twilight issue should have nothing to do with your errant male plug.

BTW - go ahead and tape that off to prevent any other issues if you're not using the beeper. It can cause a "short" to interfere with other behaviour.

I got it working.  :) I checked all the connections in the headlight bucket and checked the fuses.  While studying the wires and connectors under the fuel tank, I found the solution.  The front running lights and the taillight had no power source.  I took the chance of blowing a fuse to test my hypothesis.

Add this one to your notes.

The Brown w/Blue stripe male fitting under the gas tank plugs into a female black 3 way.

The Br/BL plugs into the turn signal buzzer with a black. If the buzzer has been removed leave those separated and tape off the black wire, its live power. I think the Br/BL will be a ground and will short out if you hit the turn signal.  ???

Lucky for me that I still have the buzzer.  One interesting feature of that jumper was one fitting had black on its skirt.
