Topic: My gear lever fell off!

Hey guys, I got an almost pristine '76 CB400F a while ago, and I was on my way to FINALLY get it inspected and registered this afternoon. Well I'm riding along and reach to shift down - only to find that my gear lever wasn't where I left it! It turns out that it slid off the shaft it was sitting on and was hanging by the gear linkage. I pulled over and was able to put it back on, but I saw that the shaft had a groove in it - is that where a snap ring is supposed to fit in place to hold it on? I've done research and I haven't been able to find any reference to anything holding it in place. Can y'all help me with this?

 Yes, there is a snap ring that holds it in place. If you look closely, you can see it in this pic.

Cheers. I'm about to call a Honda shop in town to see if they have the snap ring and washer, if not I'll order them from cmsnl.

you can order them from anywhere as long as you have the part number.
CMSNL(Holland) is pretty far

Unfortunately it almost looks like cmsnl is the only place I'll be able to get the OEM parts. All the other websites I've visited either don't list them or say not available.

Use a oittle google fu and search 'Honda '  followed by the part number

 If you have a Honda dealer near you, they can order it and you can pick it up.

A good hardware store will have one that works. I did that on a 400f restoration.

Rather than use the e-clip, I drilled a hole and used the washer along with a clip(can't thing of the proper name but it is the type where the straight side goes through the hole and the other side goes around the shaft). Never coming off again.   senior moment on the terminology, sorry..Larry

I ended up just going to a hardware store in town that had the washers and retaining clips and sticking then on there. Not the most elegant solution (the washer outer diameter is waaaaay too big), but it worked to get my bike to the inspection station and get it registered.

Actually it is not a Hitch Pin that MoMo described. It is a cotter pin.
MoMo, next time you have that you can tell anyone, when they get old they will have the same problem of having such a large vocabulary that it is easy to have those events.  At least it is not a song you can't get out of your head.  The Germans call those an Ear Worm.
Both could drive you mad.

David,  hitch is correct term for what I used.  Head is a tad clearer today ...Larry
