CB350f now CB466f
« on: March 30, 2017, 06:45:20 AM »
Hello fellow CB enthusiasts,

I've been owner of this Honda CB350f for a long time, right about 13 yrs). It was my first love after getting my bike license at the age of 20 and I've never had any reason to part with her.
"Restauration" is coming close to the end now, so I'm researching a few things about tuning / setting up ignition and carburation.
Hope to find a lot of information here, and potentially sharing a few of my experiences.

This is her:

I've done almost everything myself:
- Frame coated (had it done obviously)
- All parts going on cleaned and checked for wear and tear, renewed when needed.
- Brakes refurbished
- Forks refurbished
- Hagon's at the rear, but those have been placed over 10 yrs ago already
- Wheels refurbished and painted black (rear 1.85 rim on the front hub)
- Heidenau K36 (3.50 front, 4.10 back)
- Pigwatcher on the left bar

- CB400f engine and carbs (lost the 350 to a lean mixture)
- 4-2 exhaust with open cans (finally lost the 4-4 to rust)
- Shortened fenders front and back
- Small tail light
- Giuliari seat with new bespoke cover. Original with a twist.

It's not a cafe-racer, it's not original, it doesn't go in any frame. It's just my CB to my specs.
Hope to find loads of help and tips here, and potentially share a few of my experiences along the way.

Valve clearance set
ignition contacts replaced
Synchronized the carbs

It turned out she was really waaaaay out of sync.
What a difference this makes!

I think i have the sync quite well now:

Idle is good. Revs are good.
Nice popping and brapping in the exhaust when throttle is closed.

Only improvement should be the pick-up from idle to throttle. It feels like it dies and needs some throttle play to run in revs.
So will try a richer mixture screw position first.

popping in the exhaust could still be a lean condition. or holes...

Welcome to forum.  8)
Now that your sync is perfect, go to an idle plug chop and get your air screws dialed in for tan plugs.
Should be no popping on decel.

Thanks for the advice flybox and flatlander. The bad pick-up from idle also pointed towards a lean mix. Didn't know backfire was also a give away for lean running.
I'll be turning the mixture screws in asap, and come back with results.

Doesnt always point to a lean mix, but it does scream A/F ratio is off.  Dont assume it is too lean.
As mentioned, a 5 minute idle plug chop will TELL you whats going on. ;D

Mix turned out to be rich. Matt black plugs and lots or carbon deposits around the exhausts... Way to easy cold start without choke...

Changed the float level to 24mm now..... And I've got reliable idle!
Also a nice coffee brown color on the plug.

Still with a hot engine (seriously hot), it drowns on pick up from idle to any throttle.
Will look into the air screws a bit see what that does.

Out playing with a bigger sister yesterday:

Time for an update  :o:

My bike started to leak oil again last summer, quite heavily really, seaping from the headgasket (O-rings) and the cylinder base gasket.
For a long time, I had the idea in my head to go for a big bore kit one day, and I thought this was a good moment, considering that the barrels had to be pulled anyways.

I ordered the set from Forseti, which gives a 466cc result.
Long story short: In the last 2 months, I installed the kit, freshed up the head, painted some stuff, and the bike's running again.

First start:
Second time running (first time getting some temperature in the engine):

Parallel to the engine top-end rebuild, I started an exhaust project.
Ever since I lost the original 350f 4-4 exhaust to rust, I wanted one back. The 4 pipes just makes the little pocket rocket look so much faster and more exotic...
Sure, a new one is for sale, but:
1) Quite silent (the noise of the 4 small cylinders is one of the thrilling features of the CB, if you ask me)
(be reminded the before finally pulling the plug, I used to ride around with the rotten silencers).
2) Quite expensive.

So, I decided to make my own. Learn some (mig) welding along the way.
First I put 2 silencers on the original exhaust hangers, just slightly modifying them with one extra hole.
Then make connecting pipe (header-silencer) out of PVC (drainage pipes)
Followed by copying the PVC into steel pipe (35 mm x 1,5 mm)
Followed by painting it in exhaust paint and cooking in the oven.

repeat x4

not bad. i'll give you a call if i need new headers  ;)
i agree that the 4-4 adds some class on these bikes, that almost justifies the added weight.

I hope the extra 116cc will carry the weight and performance will not be influenced negatively.
