Concrete Solid Color Stain/Sealant
« on: April 12, 2017, 10:42:17 AM »
I had an additional 400sf added to my existing backyard patio slab yesterday, and now am planning for staining/sealing it.
Any of you have experience with H&C Solid Color Sealer or any other concrete colorants/sealants?  Thoughts?
I'm looking for something to darken the color of the concrete and be waterproof.

The best way to color concrete is to mix it in as it is being batched. I can't help you with any post-set sealants.

I have never used any concrete sealants.  But I worked in a Nissan dealership shop had it on our floors and it's great! Cleans up easy and want stain with oil etc. If it's prep rite I think it just paints on

There is nothing more beautiful than a polished concrete floor. No good outside though. I have had very mixed experiences with concrete treatments. Non of them were spectacular.

I made concrete counter tops years ago and stained it with Kemiko concrete stain.  Not sure what I used for a sealer.  Concrete Network is a helpful site.

check the rustoleum epoxy coverings available at Home Depot.  Some are a tad pricey but they are decent quality stain/sealers at a somewhat reasonable price compared to the high end products.  Mick(retro rocket) from what I remember used to do this for a living...Larry

You must seal outside concrete. The stuff they put down today is so bad that it will flake when it soaks up water and the temps get close to freezing. You end up with a surface full of pock marks.

Too true. Found this out the hard way. Will be sealing it this spring as the flakeing has already started.

What did you seal the concrete with? Did you use something like this?

If it's started flaking, you'll probably want to have it ground before putting epoxy on it.

Concrete flakes because of an improper application (floating too much water up) and an improper cure (outside in, not inside out). It has nothing to do with "today's concrete", only today's Concrete tradespeople.

All poured in place concrete is 3,000psi when cured. So, if you want a proper install, perform a slump check at your site before you accept the pour. Then hold the contractor (or yourself) responsible for proper cure.
