Kick Start lever moves freely
« on: May 07, 2017, 11:02:09 AM »
Just got my K 4 750 motor back from a professional rebuilder. Just for fun, I moved the kick start lever. It moves through an arc smooth as butter, never turning the crank. That just ain't right. Can some one inform me as to the language I should use when I meet him Monday. I can handle the cussing part. What would be the technical terms for what is not happening?

Before you cuss at the tech - did you grab the clutch lever out of habit?  I've done that and nearly ended up on the ground from a good kick!

I just looked in a box of "old used parts" that came back with the motor. In the box were a spindle, starter gear, spring, pawl, etc. May I now begin to practice cussing? Obviously, the cases will need splitting to fix this abomination. Although I retired from the practice of law, I did not forget it. Do you actually need to take the engine apart or can you access it from the clutch cover?  for some reason I thought you could get to it from there.

Kickstarter repair will require splitting the cases. Electric starter gear can be repaired/replaced by pulling the alternator and the rotor without splitting the cases.

Well #$%*! If you've been practising all these years you should be good at it by now. Quit practicing and just do it!

It's a big ol' pain in the arse getting that spring back in place, maybe he gave up and hoped you wouldn't notice?

I actually found a way to do it without any bloodshed...

I'd love to hear his excuse for not installing it.

On a 550 you can look up through the oil pan and check out what's going on. Might be able to on a 750 also. Just to confirm before you head back to your mechanic.

The oil pump runs off some gears behind the clutch cover also around the kick start area, good idea to take a look in there to see what is going on and like mentioned post up some pictures of those 'extra' leftover parts.

I'm pretty sure the oil pump runs off the kickstart gear. I remember because Hondaman's book said to check for wobble on the kickstart gear because its oscillations have an effect on oil pressure apparently, and in my case there was some wobble, so I just take note of it and pay attention to oil pressure.
