Greetings from Livingston, Montana!
« on: May 07, 2017, 02:47:51 PM »
Hi there, um I am awful at introductions and such, so I'll just get to what we're all here for. I have a 1977 CB550F that I am in the process of restoring and doing some personal touches to. Currently I have rebuilt the carbs, um and that's really about it. The bike for the most part is stripped down just the motor, forks and tires remain on as I haven't found a solution to getting the bike off the ground to go any further in terms of taking the tires and forks off and remove the engine (if anyone knows a product or solution I would be very appreciative).

I have made some purchases for the bike. I decided to go with the Motogadget Mbox 2 for when I decide to rewire the bike, the old wire harness was in shambles and quite frankly a daunting task to take on. I also went with a 4cell antigravity battery. Now I know I will need a new solid state reg/rec, and have been looking at ones (10-503 and the 10-504) from Ricks Motorsport Electrics, I'm just not sure what one I'll need for my charging system, if it's a type A or Type B?

Anyway that's pretty much it for now. I'll hopefully take pictures along the way and post them when I figure that out. Thanks for the support.

Welcome from Texas.

I use a 4" rachet strap attached to the garage joists when my bike needs a lift.

Stev-o, I was thinking about going that route, but I really don't trust my rafter haha. I might just buy a jack and snag some scrap wood from the job I'm on. Use the wood as a base under the bike...hopefully that works. Fingers crossed, I'm real eager to get this bike stripped down to the frame so I can get it powder coated and start building it back up.

Steve-O - do you have a photo of your strap setup at the rafter and showing how to strap the bike?

Try hanging on to a rafter for a brief moment.. If no cracking, and a piece of wood that goes across say four of them...tie or fasten...now hang your strap off the centre.

I use a piece of 2" angle attached to 3 ceiling joists with 6" lag screws, then I attach the strap to the head of the frame and ratchet it up.
Works great! [lower part of strap not in photo]

Had a go at the garage rafter idea today, felt pretty uncomfortable to be honest, haha. But I bought a pump jack and used a plank of engineered wood, works great. On a side note, was pretty close to going and checking out a '77 750 for sale for 400 smackers. Only reason I didn't, was I need to finish and fu d one project at a time, damn my responsible nature haha.
