75 CB550 Stator cover
« on: May 06, 2017, 05:58:08 PM »
Hello

Please see pictures. I want to take off the Honda emblem plate that is
on the stator cover to access the field coil, but I'm not sure how to get at
the screws. Any help thank you much.

You have to pry the cover off, most likely damaging it when doing so. There are three pins on the back side that press into holes on the stator cover.

Added note; the fastening pins have rubber grommet boots on them.  Spray some silicone lube on them - from the inside.  Before trying to press them out.

On mine, the cover was held in with metal clips.  They had barbs to grab the plate's pin posts and the cover's pin sockets.

They a f'ing hard to get off without marring something.

I was toying with the idea of inserting two thin feeler gauges in the slot and then pushing a wedge between them to apply lifting pressure to the cover insert.

Idea may or may not work.  :-\

Why do you need to access the stator they are incredibly reliable?

Here is what I did see pictures below.
I took a nail set and tapped from the inside
of the stator cover then the Honda emblem plate
came off with a slight pull. Thanks for all your replies.

If you have holes through from the inside something is wrong

I'm not sure that's true.  I looked at a photo of the one I had vapor blasted and also pulled out the well damaged one that came on my bike, and the cover holes do go through.  The mounting clips are visible from the inside of the bad one.  For testing, you don't need to remove the cover.  The workshop service manual shows how to test it and specifically says, "NOTE: Test may be performed without removing field coil."
