Fork oil level for a '78 750K
« on: May 20, 2017, 04:35:22 PM »
When I rebuilt the forks, I was well over a year from running the bike, so I just put some oil in to keep things lubricated, planning to drain before I'd put oil in for damping.

So, getting ready to ride the bike, I figured I'd check the level in my Clymer's manual -- I let out an audible laugh when I saw it essentially said "if there's no leaks, and it feels OK, it's probably OK" (heavily paraphrased, of course)

It has OZ measurements, but I'm used to "Xmm from the top" measurements, and have a purpose made motion pro tool for the job.

Is there a spec, or do I have to guess if the OZ measurement in the book is a 'fresh rebuild' or 'drain and fill' spec?

Drain out all of the oil as completely as you can. Refill with 5oz of whatever you are using.

It's funny that oz/ml measurements are objectively easier to work with, but I've just grown so accustomed to mm-from-top measurements that simple measurements just throw me off. I have the special tool to measure mm from top, but I don't even own a measuring cup for my kitchen I can use (bachelor confirmed...)

It is not a dipstick measurement. Go to the Dollar store and get a measuring cup.

Take the bottom drain bolt out, let the oid junk out. Pump the forks, put the drain screw back in. Pour the ATF down the fork tube, replace the fork caps at the top and you are done my friend.
