ENGINE REBUILKD FOR CANADIAN EYES ONLY
« on: April 10, 2017, 07:36:05 PM »
 :) Hey All,
I have decided to start a rebuild of my 69 with the warranty engine #1000767, and wanted to know if any of our Canadian members knows of anyone who does engine rebuilds on CB's????
Thx

I know a great guy in Brampton (if it is not too far for you) he has been working for Honda for many years, does these bikes like back of his hand. Very resourceful for parts too.

Do you want a turn-key rebuild where you drop off the engine and a pile of cash, then pick it up all fresh and shiny?  I don' t know where to have that done. After too many expensive lessons I have low trust in mechanics. By doing the basic work of disassembly, cleaning, replacement part acquisition, and reassembly myself I know what has been done... and how it was done. I do know some honest and competent machine shops to handle the heavy lifting of rebores, skimming, and valve guide/seating work. The rest is mostly common sense plus some tools and a lot of reading service manuals.
However you do it, hope to see you on the road soon!

actually my only worry is setting up the crank with any potential issues around the possibility of new bearings, clearances etc....Ive done dozens and dozens of engines, but have never done a plain bearing crank ever...
My own resto results with Hondas and Yams show I can do the cosmetic stuff to a high degree, but its the crank that worries me.......

I've had 2 CB engines rebuilt in the last year by Gord Bush in Etobicoke, ON.

I supplied all the OE gaskets and he did all the work.

I'd recommend him.

Plain bearing crank is easy, just get your head wrapped around the codes and numbers.
You order the bearing install, check with plastigage..check..wipe off the plastigage.. And run it.

As a '69 it couldn't be anything else.

Crank is pretty hard to screw up, and at least with my rebuild, original bearings were in fine shape and clearance was in spec.

If it is a sandcast, correct parts need to be used if replacing any vital, model related parts.
Not difficult to do the job if it has not been left for rusting freely for decades. The X-screws might be PITA. Good idea to look for replacement from Honda or Yamiya that sells fresh copies.
This must be done as a restore to look like a new original engine, right? Rest of the bike to be restored to original shape too?

Depends on when it got the warranty engine if it was for for the most common "case break from failed chain" warranty jobs. Not many got new sandcast cases, unless the battery was really dribbling badly the chains could last for the first year and by then Honda had diecast cases.

We have a large stock of corect sandcast parts, essentially everything EXCEPT the engine cases are SC, so we are good to go asfar as everythign else is concerned, but I just wanted some opinions about engine builders, seems there arent many around any more.
Guess at te end of the day Ill be doing it myself most likley.

Hondaman and others have had some very bad results from the typical car rebuilders, their tolerances are much looser and they will often not follow the tolerances that an aircooled motor of our vintage requires.

So, it is wise to get people who do motorcycle work and more specifically motorcycles of our vintage.

Some shops just are not reliable and they leave you twisting in the wind when there is a problem.

So, it is good to have a machinist who cares and does good work. ( duh, eh?)  So, it is good to find one who knows what they are doing and you can trust.  If they screw up a part are they going to cover the replacement?  Or are they just going to redo it for free or just argue and claim they did it right.
The MC parts tolerances are tighter than many machinists are used to...
Hondaman and a few others have had to work closely with the machinists doing the work to ensure their parts are done to the tolerance and finishes needed. Themachinist has to be open to working with you, some are and some aren't.  Then there is the disconnect between the guy taking the order and writing it up for the guy doing the work. Things do not get communicated clearly.
Good luck in your search.
David

Never believe them if they say sure we can do those too.
