Has anyone run a Competition Werks muffler on a CB?
« on: May 30, 2017, 08:30:26 AM »
Im in the middle of picking out parts for a pretty intricate build. Its going to be very far from stock to say the least. Its going to be a good mix of modern and retro... I plan on mating up a more "modern" looking muffler to a set of 4-1 headers for a sport bike kind of look.

http://www.competitionwerkes.com/index.cfm/product/1149_1/gp-slip-on-exhaust.htm

Ive looked on you tube for sound clips with no luck... I can only assume it will sound great on a beefed up CB550 motor

Can't say I've seen that particular exhaust on anyones bikes here.

But I should tell ya, the Cone Engineering stubby cans are a fraction of the price.  the mounting points are positionable weld on parts too.

I've  looked at the stubby cans as well. Possibly weld a few pie segments to make it a little more unique than the way it comes.

I'm not very confident in my polishing skill though, the header is polished already.

For that kind of coin it better come with a power increase guarantee.

For that kind of coin it better come with a power increase guarantee.

While it is a nice looking can.
Its designed for the zx6 ninja.
My educated (albeit limited) guess is the werkes can will have little to no effect on a cb550 engine.
Because; zx6 revs twice as high, where shorter exhaust pipes are a benefit.
Also; many slip-ons are designed as aesthetic parts these days.  The header pipes and catalytic converters are where the real magic happens.  Any meaniful exhaust paths are hard at work well before the smoke comes out the tail pipe.
A slip on for a modern bike offers users a better looking, better sounding, and lighter weight alternative to stock exhausts.  Not necessarily a better performing bike.

There is good reason to keep a longer exhaust pipe on a cb550.  While its okay to shorten the pipes a little, too short will cause these motors to suffer at low rpm (more than they do already)  I got real lucky when meshing my yoshi can to the mac exhaust system.  Mac had already done the legwork to determine a good length and size of tubing for a stock motor.  Had I trimmed the mid pipe any shorter, who knows where the power peak of the engine would have shifted to.

There are a few brilliant pieces of literature regarding exhaust system design and fabrication floating about the internet.  I encourage everyone refitting an exhaust to do some readin.  It's very good info to know.  If you adapt the knowledge to a custom motorcycle exhaust, the result will be music to everyones ears!

Great advice 👌🏻

I merely pulled that link off the website as an example of the can itself. I would try to leave the length similar to that if other 4-1 cb550 systems.

Everyone wants a good looking exhaust on their bike.
The real trick is getting a good looking exhaust that makes the bike perform "better".

You need to decide what you want the exhaust to do for your bike.  Are you going to do the engine and carb mods necessary to get the most out of a custom exhaust?
How do you want to ride the bike?  Will you be able to dyno tune the pipes and afford the necessary adjustments?

These were all considerations I made before handing the 750/3 project off to my fab guy's hotrod shop.  We both knew the engine is not a high rpm rocket ship.  But I want the thing to be a damn mountain goat.  Gimme torque to climb and whip some turns.  Hopefully the supertrapp mufflers will help tune in some serious midrange torque.

I'm doing a dynoman stage 2 kit with CB750 carbs (acquired from Bill).  Hopefully I can twist Bill Benton's arm into helping me tune this thing when it's done!

I'm not looking for a racer. I just want a fun street bike to cruise around on while still having a little Umphh.

Thats a perfect list of mods to compliment with a well thought exhaust!

What headers do you plan to use?  It really all starts there.

I like the welded segment look...
A few days back I was imagining the Cone Eng. Meg angling up about 25 degrees, then pie cut so the reverse cone joint was at 90 degrees to the ground... That would look cool.

Is that one of those Chinese Ebay mufflers mate? I bought a couple a few months ago as they're cheap and look pretty cool. I think I like that old couch better though! There are heaps of cheap mufflers on Ebay, so don't go spending 500 bucks on one unless you really really want one...........;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I admit, I'm a fan of the akrapovic knockoffs on ebay.

Something about that shape just produces a cool tone!

I have the alternate shape on my Triumph. I have to admit, it sounds much better than expensive arrow that I removed.

Yep, lets face it, there's not much tech in a muffler....... ;D

Even if the header tubes are bolted into place while your welding?

I guess my way of thinking probably differs from that of an actual fabricator,  haha. I'm more of a, let's just make it happen, kinda guy. My aproach would be to bolt it up... tack it all together, weld beads where you can while it's on the bike. And just finish it in a bench?

I'm going to have a friend do it for me. He builds race car chassis from scratch, so I'll pretty much drop it off, tell him what I want and let him make it happen. Haha

My 550 currently has a one piece exhaust (muffler permanently welded on). It's really not at all tricky to install, actually, it goes on quicker than the stock two piece system.

If it's securely tacked together with it all bolted in place, then removed and welded up by an experienced welder, I don't see any problems occurring (REMOVE THE BATTERY FIRST if it's a lead acid type, or at least block off the end of the breather tube or you risk exploding your battery - I know this because, I have killed two batteries, one was from a welding spark bouncing up the breather tube & the other one was from an angle grinder spark!).

If we learned one thing from JWebsters win on wrench against the machine.  It's "don't do any welding on bike while any electronics are hooked up"
