Topic: My new old scoot

I picked up my new old 1976 750 SS this weekend. I found it on ebay, bid on it and lost. After the deadbeat winner didn't pay up, I got a second chance offer. I guess it was destiny. The guy sold it to me for my bid price which I thought was relatively low, $800. It has 38K miles, has a Kerker with a rotted out baffle, and had leaky/dirty carbs until I tore into them yesterday. I also adjusted the cam chain and valve tappets. All better now. The bike has a new rear tire, front looks decent. It has a few neat items like a Dyna ignition and an oil pressure gauge. what was the winning bid that the deadbeat never paid... just curious how much he thought he was gonna get and realized how much he had to come down.

I believe he had an automatic bid setup, but I put the bid in for $800 in the last minute and was outbid. The PO said that the winning bidder contacted him and told him that he bought another bike and forgot to cancel his bid(which is a bad practice to begin with). Anyways, I believe I was meant to have this bike.

You should be convicted of robbery.  That looks worth a bit more than $880.  Congrats on the new ride.  Use it in good health.

I'm actually not sure how it's done, I personally wouldn't bid on something unless I was ready to buy it. I don't believe the PO was up to anything fishy. He seemed like a pretty cool dude. He had a bunch of bikes, but considered himself a Kawa guy. Which is why he sold me the 750.

Heff, you can log onto eaby and cancel a bid. It is called "retraction" if you are the bidder. You have to give a reason and it shows on your feedback stats. As a seller you can also cancel bids. It is less necessary that it used to be, since you can block bidders for a set number of reasons.

the thing that bothers me is the possibility of the seller having multiple accounts to bid on their own stuff to up the bid price.  then all the seller has to do is retract that bid and offer a second chance bid to the bidder that he jacked the price up on.  i don't think that happened here but, i'm sure it happens.

edit: and what's the point of the disclamer "when you click bid you enter into a legally binding contract etc."  if you can just retract that bid?

Jeez what a waste of money! you could have used that $800 and used it for a monthy payment on a new Harley.

I was a little concerned about that because the bidding history was hidden during the auction. After speaking with the owner for about an hour, it was apparent that he was cool. Also, even though the bidding history was hidden, the winner's info could be seen once bidding ended. You can see the bidder's history if you click on it. He's got 100% Positive feedback(which will probably go down after this) and a history that dates back to Apr/2000. The best thing about this purchase was that I was not obligated to buy it if it wasn't as he described. But that obviously wasn't the case.

I do not like using ebay motors as a seller or buyer of vehicles. The sellers are tricky and the buyer really suck. I moved a some restored Chevelles for friends and i nevr had more problems. Shilling is a common practice and some are not that smart. I had some dickwad who bumped up his buyer rating by buying and selling the same car amoung six of the same buyers, they simply passed it around. You did very well and congrats!!!!

Those are superbike style bars in black which i like. The geometry is very comfortable. I'll take a measurement when I get home. According to the PO the mirrors are Kawasaki LTD style mirrors.

Agreed--riding position with those bars is just about perfect.  Feels much smaller than my K8.

Despite that rotted-out baffle, or maybe because of it, it's got an awesomely raunchy exhaust note.
