Carb sealing recommendations
« on: August 16, 2017, 04:55:28 PM »
I'm doing my first carb rebuild ever and so far it's been going great thanks to all the knowledge on this forum, so thank you all!

One question I can't seem to find the answer to is how I should seal my carbs back up. Do I need to add anything like carb sealer to the gaskets or can I just put them on dry? So far I've heard of people using carb sealer, vaseline, and even superglue. I'd be curious to know which (if any) you recommend?

Thanks!

No sealant is needed but if your using a non-formed gasket on a CB550 for instance a little dab of Superglue in a few strategic locations may be needed to hold it in place till the bowl is mounted. What bike are you working on ? For 1976 or older 750's with roundtop carbs I have never hardly ever had to replace an old stock gasket,I just leave the old ones in place, their great and better then that aftermarket rubber crap that likes to swell and do other nasty things..

None.  Dry.
...and for ease of installation, your bowl o-rings should be the same shape as your bowl, and be made of Viton or Buna-N
Neither of these will swell in gasoline.
If you have those round bowl o-rings, you can use a small dab of superglue in every corner to help it stay in place.

Thanks all! I'm working on a CB550 so I bought the house shape gaskets so the fit shouldn't be a problem. Does the same go for the gaskets that go on the top side of the carbs? The ones that aren't rubber but a kind of cardboard-like material (sorry don't know the proper name)

The one's for the carb tops go on dry.
For the bowl gaskets, a small dab of grease can also be used to hold them in their grooves until the bowls are installed.
