Exhaust build
« on: August 17, 2017, 09:01:35 PM »
Hey guys, I have have been toying with an idea and I'm curious if anyone has done the same? I'm thinking of building my own stainless exhaust system.

Now I know with cars they tend to promote the same length for header tube but it doesn't seem to be the case with a lot of motorcycles that I see. Now I don't plan on a Dr suess style exhaust system but if I'm making the headers relatively reasonably match would that be an Issue? I'm just not too big of a fan of the megaphone exhaust and would like to do a 4-1 side pipe made to accept a common slip on muffler or so I can run them open or keep it down.

They are the same length tubes from head to collector.  Sometimes hard to tell because those creative types are good at making things look like they aren't.

It's not that important unless you're trying to get the absolute maximum power out of your engine. The CB750F had unequal length headers for no real ill effect, apart from the obviously ugly bulbous muffler that would grab the ground if you leaned it over during spirited cornering, I threw mine away and replaced it with an RC pipe that was a much better fit.

Get them as close as you can, but unless you're looking for a land speed record, you'll be fine. Cheers, Terry. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

I think its bad ass. I have wanted to build and exhaust and swingarm for years now, but have not taken the plunge. The bend kits from Cone Eng are a great place to start but hand bending the tubing is another option.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

Fugly 750 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr I learned a long time ago to never throw away some stock part from a motorcycle. Think about all those 300 and 341 exhausts that were replaced by 4 into 1's. On the other hand, I wonder why HD even sells bikes with exhausts. Nobody keeps them

Plenty of info on the internet on this subject. If you have the capabilities and tools to make your own pipes that is pretty cool and a leg up on most of us, best of luck and be sure to post your work.

I can do pie cuts at home I have a bandsaw and a abrasive chop saw I also have a tig welder. Did I mention I'm a welder by trade? I also have a tubing gender at work. The problem is more or less the justification of price.

You can make the Benda by plugging the ends of the pipe and filling it with silica sand. Then heat with a rosebud torch and bend away. The sand helps to know keep the pipe from kinking.

Cone engineering sells builder parts.  Collectors, expanders, reducers, etc.
