What Color should I paint the CB450 Project ?
« on: December 29, 2006, 10:53:26 AM »
Hey,

As the CB450 project is getting closer to completion, The question of paint has come up a few times in the ProTeal garage. The original plan was to leave the tank the way it is, and just spraybomb the headlite bucket and seat black. A few days ago I decided to throw my newely accquired CB750 tank on the CB450 to see how/if it fit, and was really diggin the look of the red tank on the bike
(see below)

Compare that to the way the bike looks with the stock paint on the 450 tank --->
So I have made the decision to paint the tank, seat, and headlite bucket to match, but what color ?
I am thinking about keeping the stock factory decals and badges, and just go with a more modern color. The red is nice, or I was thinking about maybe going with a Shelby type dark blue, maybe some bright green , or be daring and paint it bright white ? I threw black in their as a option, but i think I need to put some sorta color on their to offset the frame and such.

Let me know what u guys think....

Looks like the 750 tank takes up the gap between the seat and the 450 tank. That worked out good. Color is up to you man.

You are correct about the seat gap, but u have to remember that in that pic above the tank isnt really "on" the bike, nor is the seat.
Both are kinda sitting their for photo purposes. But, the more I look at it the more I wanna make that tank work on that bike (to get rid of that seat to stock tank gap.

New color choice (added to poll) is bright BMW silver with some sorta factory looking striple/swoosh and badges..

The fatter 750-tank works really well. Make it fit!
I would keep the stock paintjob on the tank (if the tank is as nice as it looks, that is...) and follow it up by painting the seat in the same red color.
Maybe even let the panel paint on the tank come back on tne seathump.

Cheers

Where is the Line-X choice? ;D

Pro,

A cafe' style mod requires something bright, especially with a seat like that.  Stay away from drab colors or light colors like silver.  I have come across a few sweet colors over the past few months, very unique, but vintage at the same time.  I like the original graphics, if you can combine them with a cool color, go for it.

I saw a really awesome Kandy Rootbeer from HOK (House of Kolor) and a even sweeter Kandt Teal from HOK - with a stagename like your's, you gotta choose the later. ;)

Well after some time in the garage earlier today, I got the seat to fit better on the frame, and now their is no more gap between the front of the seat the tank. This is a very good thing, and also means the CB750 tank will no longer work - so back to the original 450 tank for this project.

Trying to find a color for this bike is going to be the end of me. I spent some time today walking thru a local "auto mall" looking at cars of different colors trying to get some ideas, and came up with nothing. I am leaning towards silver, but I think I wanna do something better.
I wanna keep it some what "vintage" based, but not something like antique olive green.
As of now I am leaning towards Silver of a Red similar to whats on my CB750 tank (above pic).
I think the red would be a good contrast against all the black on the bike..

Please keep the comments/help comming, it is appreciated...

Proteal, I have been going through the same anxiety regarding what color to paint my CB500. I had decided on yellow, but now I have been having second thought. (obviously I am not concerned with vintage color schemes)

I looked at a few rebuilt CBs over the last day or so (on line) and I really think I am going to end up going with a silver tank (and probably no emblem on it, even though I have them and they are in good shape)

I would love to so away with the side covers for good because I like that clean look of no battery in the side case etc. But I really am not particularly fond of cafe seats. (and it is under that hump that batteries seem to be stashed)

I will be using the bike for short to medium distance county road touring and the cafe racer seats (and posture required to ride them) just don't add up to a comfortable combination in my estimation!

So, I suppose the side panels will also be silver - that or a solid black.

Choices choices!

Whoa!!!! The color rocks but what kinda tank is that? I don't care for the shape of it or the stripes on Teal's bike but the color is cool.

the stripes are 360 stripes from another thread.  i dont know how i feel about the look.  i still like green and i would like to see how the emblems and decal really overlap.
i did those mockups quick and didnt zoom out to see how i was treating the tank surface.  this is a better version of teal's (with the stock 450 tank)

Maybe its just the stripe that makes it look like the tank sloops up too much in the front. I dunno.....I think maybe I liked that 750 tank on there better. Of course I'm not lookin at the bike in person.....Hell.....who knows what the best route to go???? I bet its gonna kick ass when its done anyway!!!

Thanks for the mockup !
I think the tank in the pic above is kinda distorted with the addition of the graphics, thus it looking kinda weird.
I do like the bike in blue though. Here is a better pic for you guys to Photochop (if u so choose)
[/img]
I am really on the fence about the color for this bike. Color and graphics can make or break a entire project, so I wanna make sure
whatever I pick is the right choice.

If you like the way the blue color and striping of the CB360 work out, maybe you could find a decent 360 tank? It's a lower and slimmer tank to begin with, and it would probably be just the thing for a sleek cafe look... IMHO.

There's a cheap 360 tank on eBay right now (BIN $35). It's beat up, but you could judge fit with it. Just a thought...

OK, I suck at photoshop (well, I never used it until tonight, so cut me some slack!). I think this is what ProTeal is looking for...

I grafted a pic of my wife's CB360 tank (which he liked) onto the CB450

Thanks KK for the photochop.
I am still on the fence about what color to paint the 450 project.
I think that blue with the cb360 stripe would look good, but then agin i dont like it.
I am back on the Silver thing, but i am not sure about that either.
Maybe just say screw it and go with a simple gloss black ?

Just throwing this out there...I'm really thinking of doing a pearl white on my bike with some stock graphics.  I always like the way those pearl paints "glow" in the sunlight.  I think it would look pretty nice on the countours of a gas tank, kind of subtle.

Wish it came in a spray can so I could do it myself though.

pearl white with silver pinstripe and old black and chrome badges?  that would be a subtle but trick look.
