Melbourne Cup 2017
« on: November 05, 2017, 09:30:25 PM »
Ok, I need some tips.
And not "be nice to your mother and don't gamble"
I need, want, wouldn't mind, a lazy trifecta paying a gazillion dollars, that can fund my next motorcycle purchase.
thank you.

Flemington Race 5
No 12 - William Thomas
I'm putting an each way bet on him Scun.

Last years winner Almandin is showing good form and might worth an each way.
Another sure bet is that I'm probably gonna be outa pocket and pissed off when the races are finished.
Just for something completely different.  ;D

Thanks for posting Mick, I don't know sh1t about betting on horse races, so I might give it a crack.

I'm loving my 4 day long weekend. Saturday was my K2 bitsa Roadworthy Inspection day (pissed it in) Sunday was mowing/weed whacking/blowing/drinking heaps of cider day, today was taking my Harley Sportster for a ride day (once I changed the main jet, adjusted the mixture, washed the cat piss off both wheels and jump started my dead battery) and tomorrow it's fix the mother in laws garage day. (a slab of cement sheet has fallen off, and I don't want her minty 1981 Toyota Corona or my worked 351 Cleveland engine getting rusty)

I remember Pete saying that he was working his way toward retirement by taking every Wednesday off, and I reckon that's a good idea, working for more than 2 days in a row sucks balls! Best of luck on the cup! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Thanks mate.
Melbourne Cup is the only once a year gamble for me.
We use to follow the horses a bit years ago and had some big wins and some fcuking big losses as well.

A mate and myself were feeling rather pleased with ourselves years ago after a few big wins and so we decided to buy into a race horse syndicate.
This horse was called Fanta's Pride and was looking promising.
One Saturday, it had a race at Pioneer Park in Alice Springs and was the red hot favourite to win.

So we got dressed up in our best clobber and headed off to the Noonamah Pub where there was a TAB and a big screen.
After a few beers, we decided to put a thousand bucks on it's nose for a win.
The race started and Fantas Pride was blowing the doors off of every other horse in the field.
You beauty, we were excited.

As the race progressed, a few of other horses were starting to catch up with Fantas Pride and began passing him.
Then another horse passed, and another one, and another one and then the rest of the field passed him and Fantas Pride was running last.

Well that was the fastest 1000 bucks that we'd ever spent and so the ol' mate and myself decided to drown our sorrows.
As if that wasn't bad enough, we then had to face the ferocious wives when we got home drunk and penniless.

We were thinking that we might receive a bit sympathy but we got that wrong too.  ;D
If I was you
I'd be worried about me.

Ha ha, I love those stories Mick, I worked with a bloke who's son was a jockey and back in the 90's they decided that they'd buy a race horse from Un Zud, for 50 grand, plus air freight to Oz.

They paid up front, the big day came, they went out to the airport to collect it and move it into quarantine, the only problem was that when they arrived, the horse was dead. Apparently it went mental during the flight, then had a massive hearty, and dropped dead.

Gary hadn't insured it, so lost his $50K, plus another $10K for air freight, disposal of the dead horse etc. I've got a sneaking suspicion that his son didn't pay his half either, as they weren't on very good terms several years later when I worked with him. They certainly didn't buy another one.......... ;D

Well being a betting noob, I went into panic mode and made 10 x $10 bets, so all going well I'll (possibly) win my money back! Woohoo! ;D

My long shot William Thomas came in 3rd in Race 5 at Flemington and picked up 35 bucks.
Then the other donkey Almandin that I backed in the Melbourne Cup came in 12th.
Good bye 35 bucks.  ;D

This is why it's called "The sport of Kings" Mick. We mere minions are hard pushed to absorb a loss on the gee gees, Kings on the other hand merely raise taxes a smidgin and go again.

The Irish trainers bought home the bacon this year Kev.
I went to the Parap Pub at 10am this morning to put my bets on and the guys and gals were already getting stuck into the festivities.
When I returned at about 3pm to pick up my 35 dollar winnings for the bet that I placed on William Thomas, the guys and gals were all full of juice and hangin' loose.
Needless to say that there'll more than likely be a few sickies on the cards tomorrow.   ;D

Well I managed to back the second place winner each way, so won the princely sum of $38, or more to the point, lost $62. Being the big time gambler that I am, I "re-invested" the $38 on 4 more races, all on long shots, and am happy to report that I had a 100% result. Blew the lot............. ;D

First three places for Irish trainers, not half bad at all.

Sadly, the fast horses eluded me and it was back to work this morning. The new toy will have to wait for my next " get rich quick scheme"
