Fairly simple question but first let me lay the ground work. Title explains most, I’m about to put the camshaft and sprocket back in the engine. The bike was moved around a bit so I can’t just line up the timing marks on the cam.

I’m taking the side cover off and I have to line up the timing mark in there and on the cam.
When I set the timing does the engine have to be on the compression stroke?

Also the timing chain seems short now how do I push the tension spring back and hold it there so it stops holding the chain inward thus making it to short to insert the cam shaft? I’ve loosened the bolts all the way but I guess that is just what attaches the spring to the head.

So that’s my question/ questions.

I’ll be downloading the service manuals soon but some tips and tricks would be nice from the 1982 cb650 veterans.
