F model engine numbere
« on: February 12, 2018, 05:22:12 AM »
I just bought my second restoration project, a 1976 F model as stamped on the frame. The engine number starts with "CB750E". My question is does the E mean its a K motor in a F frame? Why did the factory stamp a E instead of F, anyone know?

This chart says they can contain and E or an F. See if your numbers jive up.  I'll check a couple of mine to see what they say.  http://www.hondachopper.com/engine/engine_timeline/timeline.html

The chart says it could be E or F, but why? is it possible they put a K engine in a f frame? The numbers could be on a K according to the chart.

What's the rest of the engine serial number?

Both of my 75 F engines start with CB750E-250xxxx. The series goes up to CB750E-2515054.

A 76 CB750F engine should be CB750E-2515094 and up to approx CB750E-2554xxx.

These numbers are from my official Honda brand parts manual. No FE indicated. Mike, what type of documentation are you looking at?

Both of my F's only had an "E" in the engine number.  And I KNOW one of them was all original.

I checked 3 of my 750 F's at the shop today and all three had just the E and no F in the serial numbers. They are 1975-76 bikes.

I am looking at the "Honda Motorcycle identification Guide" as well as the Honda CB750 books written by John Wyatt and Mark Haycock.
The Honda publication as well as both authors list F engine numbers as CB750FE.. 8)
But I guess those who own Fs know best.

Damned Photobucket! I'd easily post up the page in my Honda Parts book with the official info if they weren't such #$%*s. Looking at the parts book again it actually shows "ENGINE NO.: 750F-2500001 TO SUBSEQUENT" for the 75 and similar for the 76 and neither are shown as E or FE. I'd be glad to text it. If anyone wants to see if just shoot me a PM with your phone number. I have/use 4 different service manuals too and they all have inaccuracies.

Mike, I've seen mention of that fabled "FE" designation before but have never seen one so that's why I asked. I wonder if that is a non-US thing?? My original 75 I purchased 4/75 is engine number CB750E-2501954 build 1/75 and my other is CB750E-2507896 build 2/75. The last 75 was built early 4/75.

The "Honda Motorcycle Identification Guide" - I am sure you guys are familiar with it - is U.S./North America only. I first thought too it was a non-U.S. thing. But it obviously isn't. No idea why this is. I will browse through my books to see if anybody has a picture of an "FE" engine number.

I've never seen the elusive FE engine number. It may have been a non-North American number.
I would love to see an actual photo if anyone owns one.
The following is from the 75/76 Honda CB750F parts fiche.

Ah! Perhaps the reference to the 'FE' is a compilation of frame (F) and Engine (E) designations?? The serial #'s on the frame and the engine are different, having the Letter changed, and of course, the serial #'s in the range for that year...

No, the publications I referred to clearly say "Engine Serial-No CB750FE...." while chassis numbers are CB750F...
I am pretty sure it is one of these idiosyncrasies that pop up ever so often with Japanese bike documents 8)

I have also owned 4 750f's, two 75's, a 76, and a 78, and non of them have or had any letter but an E in the engine number
If it works good, it looks good...
