OK Serenity......here comes the part where we hijack your thread (no offense darling!!!!!.....just jump in appropriately!!)
I was a mechanic at a gas station in wyoming. Before I worked there(I always miss all the good stuff).....My boss told me one Sunday some guy comes pulling into the station flame on!!!!! He freaked out and directed the dude to the car wash that was right next door to the station and even had an adjoining parking lot(kinda of!).....Out of the station to the car wash was kind of a dip in the parking lot. This guy on fire flew through the parking lot and hit the dip and made some more damage but at least he didn't hang around and blow up the station!!! This is a good thread to start....the old stories from working round the shop!!!!
OK.... hijack over. My advice to people that are leary of ever taking their vehicles to a mechanic......If you don't know zip about how your vehicle works.......find SOMEONE that does...even if he doesn't know what to do ,he should at least know someone that does!!! You really need to find someone you can trust........wheather he can fix it or not.At least steer you in the right direction and not rip you.If you know your way around stuff, you can tell when someone is feeding you sh!t and you can move onto someone better..........mrbreeze.....mechanic to the stars!!!!!!!!!

I accidentally set my son's old Ford on fire last year, the cops had defected it for a variety of minor things (torn carpet, rip in upholstery, and an oil leak) so I spent all day installing a better interior, and the last job was to replace the valve cover gasket, then degrease the engine.

I drove over to the local car-wash, popped the hood, sprayed everything with 2 dollar shop degreaser, (not oven cleaner) then as I was about to hit it with the high pressure gun I thought I better start it first, anyway, I hit the starter, and "FWOOMP"! Up it went! Bugger!

I panicked, slammed the hood shut, only to see flames licking under the bumper, with burning oil dripping onto the concrete floor! What to do? There were no fire-extinguishers that I could see, (why would you need one at a car wash?) so I ran over to the coin operated thingy, but my coins kept just rolling thru! All the while, smoke is coming out from under the Fairlane hood, but no-one else in the car wash seemed to have noticed, "Fark!" "Fark!", I must have sounded like a big fat crow!

Eventually the machine accepted one of my coins, and I selected "streak free rinse", from memory, then ran back to the old Fairlane and after getting the hood open again, managed to douse the fire. Amazingly, there was no discernable damage, all that had burned was the old oil mixed with the degreaser! By this stage I was a sweaty mess, so I took a minute to regain my composure, finished washing the engine, then drove the car over to where my son works.

I told him the whole story, embellished in my favor of course to increase his incredible respect and admiration for me, but he was nonplussed. He just looked at me and said, "But Dad, isn't it insured?" You see, I gave him that car, and although I still loved it, (it was badly damaged by an errant truck driver a couple of months later and "written off" by the insurance company) to him it was just an old car, so he would have preferred the insurance dollars as a deposit on a car that he wanted, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Good god John (Old Biker)!
Another shock.  Obviously Aussies can't spell. I'm sure she meant to say you look so extinquished.
Funny- you're always so good looking in the racing shots...

You Aussies have incredibly strict laws there that I don't understand.  Half the cars would be sidelined here in the 'States.

Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

The laws here are pretty strict, but my son just got shafted because he was out late minding his own business (he worked in a trendy clothing store at the "Crown" Casino which is open 24/7, so he worked late at night and was pulled over on his way home from work at 4am)  so when the cops couldn't get him for speeding or drinking or taking drugs they got him for BS like a rip in the drivers seat, worn carpet and an oil leak, it's just part of being a kid here, I had the same problem when I was his age riding big bikes, I got hassled by "the man" on a regular basis.

The level of severity is different from state to state, in some states each vehicle has to be inspected every year, while in other states it's only a requirement if you sell the car (or bike) or if the cops slap a defect notice on it. I see lots of really badly rusted old bombs still getting around, mostly driven by old farmers, but they never seem to get pulled over. I think regular inspections are a good thing though, I saw an old guy who got "T boned" 30 years ago, and his old car was so badly rusted, it broke in half,. He was wearing a seat belt so when the ambulance arrived, he was still snugly  attached to the front seat of the car, unhurt, but the back of the car was 20 feet away! Cheers, Terry. ;D
