Pudding Bowl helmet for Honda CB550???
« on: January 05, 2007, 04:16:46 pm »
I'm looking for a classic Pudding Bowl helmet, the one with leather ear flaps, preferably in white...I'm in the States, so someplace in USA would be nice...

It's for my vintage Honda CB550 Four...Like my dogs, I like to feel the wind whistling by my ears...   ;D

Anybody seen anything like this hereabouts???
...stock 1972 CB500 '500 Four' undergoing re-assembly...
...Stock 1972 CL450 'Scrambler' also being re-assembled...

But.... Here is an article that I hope you will read.

Why should you wear a full-face helmet?
by Jeff Dean

Ask 1.2-million-mile BMW rider Dave Swisher, of Bowling Green, Virginia. That's his helmet after he suffered a crash in West Virginia. Dave came out of it just fine—thanks to his full-face helmet. No facial reconstruction was needed. In fact, because Dave was wearing full gear, he was able to ride home!

What would have happened had he been wearing a three-quarter helmet or, worse yet, a “shorty?”

The diagrams above show the impact areas on crash-involved motorcycle helmets. (Source: Dietmar Otte, Hannover Medical University, Dept. of Traffic Accident Research, Germany.) Note that 35% of all crashes showed major impact on the chin-bar area. This means that if you ride with an open-face helmet, you are accepting only 65% of the protection that could be available to your head.

If you ride with a shorty or half helmet, you are accepting only 39% of the protection you could obtain. You are literally throwing away 61% of the protection you would have had had you chosen a full-face helmet.

And, of course, if you ride wearing a “novelty” helmet or no helmet at all then you have none of the protection you could have chosen.

I concur with jrr. And thanks for finding that statistic covered helmet illustration. I had an old helmet decalled with the stats as a visual aid for our motorcycle gear theory class.

I could see having a 'pudding basin' helmet for static photos with a classic motorcycle but personally wouldn't wear one for any serious riding.

But we've been down this road many times before..........

It's your choice but..........I think most of us on this forum wouldn't be seen dead in a tiny little thing like that, or maybe we would be seen dead in it. I saw some statistics in the latest Time magazine, something like 3,400 motorcyclists killed in the USA in 2006. Sheesh....I always like to shorten the odds in my favour.

I had ordered that exact helmet from someone in NY on ebay. I do like the vintage helmet look myself...but this one was not up to what I wanted. It is cheap. The thing was also huge, made me look like an alien or riding a litlle yellow bus...I sent it back. I have not tried on the Davida helmets, but they look like good quality.

I've read the marked increase in MC fatalities are largely due to 50+ year olds doing their mid crisis thing. Implied is slower reflexes, under training and just not good at taking a hit as when younger.

It`s not if you`re going to lay it down ...it`s WHEN are you going to lay it down. You can be the safest rider in the world but you have absolutely no control over other drivers around you.
Had someone pull out in front of me and believe me, I tried to keep my head up when I hit the tarmac. It only made contact for a split second .... I don`t know about others but I think I look better with a face attached.
And the inside has a perfect mold of my chin.

Thank you all for the replies!  ;)

I was not trying to stir up old disputes, or promote controversy over sex, religion, or politics.

I just like the old pudding bowl (or porridge bowl) helmets, and after seeing this "classic" looking helmet on eBay, thought it would be cool to own one. (My old half-helmet disintegrated years ago and was discarded).

I will also be looking for a pair of vintage goggles with a handlebar mustache attached.   ;D

I respect sticking to what you like.

If you are looking for goggles, I would recommend the Halcyon with the split-angled glass.

They are tough to find but so worth it. The curved ones have a bit of distortion in my opinion but I am pretty fanatical about that kind of stuff.

The ones with two flat pieces of glass, joined at an angle, in each lens are really nice. Stay away form the plastic-covered fabric and stick with the real leather. You will save yourself some frustration and if you get the leather, it will probably be the last goggles you will ever need to buy.

Aren't they supposed to look huge??? The few photos of British vintage events that find there way here all seem to have huge pudding bowl helmets...and WW1 goggles...and handlebar mustaches...   ;D

Geezus! If that pic os Spitty doesn't put you off this whim to wear a "helmet" that was out-dated even before your bike was built mate, nothing will!

Now back to reality, I just bought a new Nolan helmet with a flip up chinbar thingie, what a revelation! It looks like a full-face, but it's strong like a full-face, and if you want to put some sunnies on, drink a drink, smoke a fag (if you can't find your cigarettes and you're really angry...........) or show the attendant at your local gas station that you don't intend to rob him, this is the ticket! Check it out! Cheers, Terry. ;D ;D

You sure got that one right, went to the IOM in 1978 (or was it 1979, well that was the ex) for my honeymoon (on the Cb750F1) just to see him race again.

I've got a Davida Classic as my every day helmet for banging around town.  For serious rides, I need to get a new helmet and I'm probably going to get a Shoei or Arai Full-Face along with a Davida 3/4 helmet so I have one for each mood.

Though I did some interstate touring with the Davida and aside from being wind-noisy (earplugs mostly cured that), it was a great helmet.

Also, the Davida "Pudding Bowl" is the best fitting helmet I've ever put on.  It's shaped perfectly for my head.  My head is oval-shaped front-to-rear and the Davida feels like they used my head for the mold.  It fits so perfect.

I was lucky enough to shake Agostini's hand only a couple of years ago when he came out for the Phillip Island Classic, it was very brief, but to get close enough to actually touch a living legend who I only saw on TV or in magazines "back in the day", was an incredible thing.

I never saw him wearing one of those pudding basin helmets though, that might be why he's still alive today. Cheers, Terry. ;D

They sure look the same, don't they???   :o I did a Google Image search, got those among thousands...

Gotta be from his early days...After all, there had to be a time before there were full face helmets, right???   ;D

They used to sell that Hailwood pic (his back, riding the 6-cyl Honda) at the local poster shop...4' x 6' I think it was...  :o
