I have a poulan pro 42cc 18" for firewood cutting. After 20 minutes runs like garbage, but cheap and reliable saw. Also have a Stihl Farm Boss 20".....beast. beast. Older saw, wider bar. Cuts stuff the hard way just for fun.

You did well Dave, $300 for a bit of a cleanup, bonus! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Geez Dave!. You sure are good at finding stuff. First a nice big Husqvarna in a dumpster. and now this one on the side of the road that "probably fell off the back of a truck".
Maybe you should start "looking" for big gold nuggets. :)

Nice work Dave, I just bought a chinese angle grinder with chainsaw attachment for trimming the enormous Conifer behind my house, seems to work pretty well, and much quieter than my chainsaw, so keeps the missus away until its too late...... ;D

Yep, it is best not to let some people know what you are up to.
My neighbours are "horsey" people and they had a big row of pine trees that were getting too big for my liking. Taking a view and sunshine away.
I asked them if I could cut the pines down.
They said NO.
In a hilarious twist of fate, a couple of weeks later a big branch fell out of one of the pines and killed their favourite horse.
They seemed to have a suspicion it was me that somehow caused it. Anyway after that they paid someone to cut the lot down.
We share a boundary of several hundred metres. If there is a problem tree nowdays a cordless drill and an enourmous syringe full of glyphosate proves easier than asking questions.

I found this piece of #$%* bunnings GMC brand poor excuse for a chainsaw a while ago,it goes like a raped ape no #$%*!,sure its a plastic piece of #$%* but it goes so well?i cut all this bbq wood with it no sweat today and its been handy save me firing up a real saw for a quick cut or two,it had one of those low kick back poofter safety chains so I did the right thing and ground that feature right off the #$%*,cuts like fury now for a piece of #$%*,i sort of hate it and love it at the same time, bit like the vibe I get of my wife?

That looks like it's had a hard life Dave, but shove a bar and chain on it and you'll make a few bucks. Last year (or maybe the year before, it's all a bit of a blur) I did the impulse buy thing and bought a 23 HP Briggs and Stratton V Twin on FB for 200 bucks, thinking it might be cool to build a mini bike with a wumping big V twin, but it was a vertical shaft engine that needed too many mods to tip it on it's side to operate as a horizontal shaft unit. Anyway I checked it over, did the valve clearances, cleaned out the carb, and fixed the stuck electric starter, and it fired right up on the bench.

Cool, but almost forgotten until today when I saw a zero turn ride on mower for sale with a blown up engine, for 100 bucks on FB, so needless to say, I snapped it up 4 minutes after the seller placed the ad, woohoo! I'm picking it up on Saturday morning, so this weekend, I'll be doing me some back yard engineering, and hopefully, some zero turning........... ;D

Thanks Dave, the seller seems like a pretty cool guy, he said it'll work fine with another engine, so for a hundred beans I think it's worth a punt, I used to spend more than that per week on booze........ (geez I miss it) ;D

Well I hope Dave doesn't mind me pushing my way into the chainsaw thread with talk about mowers, but hey, mowers and chainsaws go hand in hand, don't they?

Anyhoo, so today was the big day, I hooked up my bike trailer that hasn't turned a wheel since I bought the big Kawasaki's last year, and drove out to Monegeeta to pick up the beaut mower. The seller, Otto, was a nice bloke, a big German guy who'd sold his house as he and his wife were in their 70's and had decided to move into a retirement village when they return from their around Australia "Grey Nomad" drive, towing a new caravan behind their new 4WD.

The mower is in better condition than expected, looking at the FB pics I thought it was an old dunger that  had probably been left outside but the "faded" paint just turned out to be dust from sitting in his garage for the last few months since he blew the engine, for the second time. Both times because he forgot to check the oil, so the original 17 HP Briggs engine blew up, then the 14HP Husqvarna shortly afterwards. Check your oil men!

Terry's mower adventure 30 Mar 2019 1 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

Anyway, it looks good, and I took all the old engine bits with me because I knew I'd need the pulleys, exhaust, and probably some of the wiring to put on mine. As previously mentioned I've got a 23 HP Briggs engine here to go on, so it shouldn't be too hard at all, I was happy to see that the electric clutch and pulley assembly off the old engine is a nice tight fit on my briggs, so I shouldn't need too much to make it all work, I'm even hoping that the engine mount holes on the mower line up with my engine, but that might be pushing it......

Terry's mower adventure 30 Mar 2019 4 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

It's a big sucker, and probably too big for my little yard so once it's done I might have to sell it on, but that's OK, I was trying to decide what to do with that Briggs engine anyway, so it'll be good to marry my engine into that mower and make a few bucks. Geez, even the battery seems to be holding a charge! ;D
