Need a long 20 mm dia axle.
« on: February 17, 2018, 11:51:18 AM »
I need 13 1/2 or so before threads start,  longer is ok, 20 mm shaft no steps.
Plenty of eBay axles but rarely list the length on them.
I am thinking a bike that used a thick alloy swingarm  not stepped down for axle, or a shaft bike may have that kind of length. If you have a bike you can measure, please do   no need to pull the axle.
Someone suggested goldwing maybe, are they 20 mm ?
I can always get shafing and thread both ends if I can't find one.
 It's for a Savior frame.

Checked my axle inventory:

Honda swingarm axles are usually not 20mm and not as long as you need. I have a CBX rear axle that is 20mm, 12.5 inches long and threads start at 11.5 inches. I have one other shaft that is the length you would need, no idea where it cam from. It is 20mm and has a strange head. Not a hex. Two flat sides. I am getting ready to go to a concert. I can take a pic tomorrow

Ah, Amen Savior frame.. It has the Plunger type shock on the axle. I will look at Pat's shop, but won't be able to until Wednesday, Frank. Wish I had seen this earlier, but I was over there already today, and he just closed up for the day.

Charlie, not a biggie.
If I just knew what model I can try to find one here, or just make one if I can get the shafting, (probably have a 3 ft minimum)
The  stuff I get from US gets shipped to WA state  then I pay 4 bux per order   then I have to drive 200 miles to get it and pay tax at the border.
Some axles are cheap with free shipping.. that helps . But mainly if I have a make and model, that helps.
The one Mike described might work, if I thread the second end.
I will See  how much the shaft costs,  the original ones  were threaded both ends.

Wow, that sounds like a lot of hassle and money just to get an axle that might already be available... Give me a couple days, if Pat goes over Monday to feed Henry his cat, I'll go over and measure a few.

You can probably find a used Suzuki swing arm pivot shaft the right length, 1982 to around 1998 before they got all 25mm+'hollow axle'
I just checked, have several 13-1/2" long but only 17mm dia. XS650 uses 20mm but can't check length until tomorrow

Ain't the AMEN frames all inch sized? I've only seen them 3/4" or 1", never seen one metric?

XS 1100 rear axle?

That would make it 25mm then... or 18.5mm... hmmmm

I got a 77/78  axle in there now it just maybe gets to the far plunger.
They used 20 mm so that your stock wheel would fit. .

I dont think anyone was using 1 in or 25mm , back when these frames were built.

Here is what happened last axle I bought  sv 650 front forks. Found one in Canada , with shipping ran around 30 bux. Fronts have a stepped thicker portion. . Unbeknownst to me the SV used two diameters over different years... of course I did not know and the one I got was smaller. So I made a sleeve on an unfamiliar lathe, and flubbed it., a bit under size , gave to make another... aaarrrgghhhh.

I learned in the shop years, easiest is to get ground shafting, then thread both ends.. or 1 end and weld a nut on the other.

That makes sense Frank. It would have to fit either a Harley wheel or the Honda one... When I stuck an XS650 swing arm on my RD350, I had to get a longer rear axle, think I used a Suzuki something or other, I just measured it and got one that was a tad longer, and used a spacer for the extra length then the axle nut. It made a spot for the rear stand on that side, then I tapped the other side and used a bar end for the stand on that side. Worked out ok!

3/4 is 19mm (actually 19.05mm)
You could probably find a front wheel drive or 4wd front drive shaft the right diameter on the 'reduced' part and cut the splined ends off. It's what 'we' used to do 'back in't day laddie'

I used to keep turn and ground precision 4140 3/4 inch on hand to whip up Harley axles.
T & G precision shaft makes it easy, but I know 20 mm , will be a bit harder to get..
I will call the metal supplier on monday. Like to get frame on wheels soon.

It's on its way 1045 ground shafting 20mm.
Guy is bringing in a whole bar but cutting 29 inches for me, enough for 2 axles.
Now to design a spinner knockoff nut to match the wheels.

Thanks for the help ,mi know  a few of you looked.
