Bike wont turn over all of a sudden..
« on: March 04, 2018, 12:11:09 PM »
Long time since I have been around but I'm back.
Recently found a 77 CB750 and brought it home. I was giving it a once over and turning it over using the kick starter (wanted to check compression with my gauge)then all of a sudden it seemed to freeze up.

I'm not sure if a freely turning engine would seize just by using the kick starter, or if it is just compression lock?

Any ideas?

The safest way to manually turn the engine over is to take the alternator cover off and use the bolt in the end of the crank.  Try to turn it clockwise which is normal rotation, if it will not turn DO NOT FORCE IT.  See if it will turn back counterclockwise, if it will then you will need to investigate the cause.  It may be a simple fix, or might require you to pull the engine to find the issue.

Did the engine turn over a few times before it 'froze' or did it stop turning on the first stroke of the kick lever. If so then you could have fuel or something in one of the cylinders. Might want to at least pull the spark plugs before trying anymore.

From the alternator side counterclockwise is the normal rotation.........(or your clocks may run different from mine  ;D )

Pull all the spark plugs first to ensure there isn't any gas or water in the cylinders causing hydro lock and potential damage. Then turn it over by hand as suggested to see that the motor is free.
If it is stuck then further investigation will be needed.

On a bike that you have no real history or that has sat for sometime it is good to pull the plugs and spray all the cylinders with fogging oil or deep creep. Let this soak for awhile and turn the motor over by hand.
Any stuck rings or rusted cylinders will have an opportunity to free up and be lubricated before you are running pistons up and down a dry bore.

Pulled the plugs added some MMO and then took the alt cover off, and it turned over that way, then the kick was able to move after that as well.

Thanks guys, its been awhile since I have worked on one of these guys and it brought back some memories.

I didn't get that far, but the oil that came out when I tool the alt cover off was pretty bad. Had that oil/gas smell.

I have moved (married divorced and re-married, had kids..) since I last worked on bikes so I plan on setting up my garage a bit better this weekend so I can really get into it.
