Weinmann BMW alloy RIMS
« on: May 02, 2018, 02:00:54 AM »
Hi all

I have a friend who can give me for free 2 alloy rims (front / back), 40 holes. These rims are from an old bmw. The brand is Weimann. I'm wondering if i take these rims from him and put them in my CB 750 K2 instead of my steel rims.

Thank you for your input

Thank you for the reply

i guess then that i cannot just go and buy new stainless spokes to mount with these rims. I should go with spokes manufactured by bmw or make custom spokes, right ?

You need to know what the hub diameter was that the rims came off of. If that matches (or is close) to what hubs you want to use now, then they could be made to work. At that point, you will need to get spokes made for the proper length by either sending it all to Buchanan's or measuring very carefully and getting them the info they need.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

Buchanans can carefully change the hole angle by removing more material IF they feel it  will not make the rim unsafe to cause a failure.  They are experts and have the equipment to do it quickly and efficiently.  They can roll threads on your new SS spokes cut to proper length.  They true and can balance the rim if you ask for the later, the former always being done.  $100 is not a bad price given what you are getting.  The expense of shipping adding to this of course.  They ship a lot of things so their corporate rates with their carriers will not be bad.  Not sure if they have the ability to bill you and cover the " freight" getting the hubs and rims to them...that would be ideal I think.

If you provide measurements to have spokes made and the spokes you get are incorrect, they are still yours too.

One aspect of custom spokes (and why you send the hubs and rims to them) is they measure and create the spoke needed. No rim or hub modification is generally needed that way. Lacing and Truing does cost extra, but I’d spend it since you’ve saved enormously on the rims already.

Yes, many stories of people who sent them measurements or provided the rim manufacturer and size info along with the current hub size off of a stock bike and ended up with custom spokes that did not fit and Buchanan's would not fix it without major issues and if they did get it fixed it was by sending the rim and hub to them and sometimes having them lace it and truing it. So, as Don R stated, if you make a mistake then it is on you and you have a set of spokes that you can use for craft projects or epoxy stirring rods or children and adult "mobiles", etc.
Motorcycle art is popular if you wish to turn old parts into lamps and many other creative reuses. Most of the time it is not rusty parts being used... They have a lacquer or polyurethane or similar sealing material that can make any old motor parts look oiled...  A search for images of Motorcycle parts art or lamps or clocks, etc. will yield a huge return list.

Looking good!

One rear spoke looks a little kinked if the pic is enlarged....maybe an illusion?
