4:1 exhaust/muffler support?
« on: May 23, 2018, 05:54:25 PM »
Hey guys, I've got a kerker 4:1 header that I would like to mate to a 2.5"Diameter muffler with a baffle. The current 3in straight open exhaust is just insanely loud and provides no backpressure.

So I'm thinking about buying a Cone Engineering 2.5in reverse cone muffler, it seems like it's too heavy to just hang there, attached by clamp to the header.

Currently, the only way my entire exhaust system is attached, is by the 8 bolts at the engine/start of the header. It seems fine for now that the bike is not moving, but this doesn't seem like a good solution on a running bike. How do I secure my exhaust properly? It seems like I will have to weld a support attachment to the exhaust and to the frame, then use a spring, is that the only way? Any other ways to do it? I tried searching on the forums but the search is down and I couldn't find much on google.

Thanks!

Kerker + CONE 18" on my K8.
Two HD clamps and some bar stock was easiest for me, or you can have a guy TIG a bracket to the muffler near the rear peg mount.
CONE makes good products.

Really appreciate your photo! That looks like the way to do it.
Did you have to cut relief slits into your muffler because of the clamp? Or did you just weld the muffler/header together?

The original Kerker muffler on my stock 750F header is attached by a bracket on the muffler that bolted on at the regular muffler support.

The Kerker on my 550, which is attached to a Kerker header used a long support rod made of flat stock that runs from the bracket on the muffler to the upper shock mount.

With the Cone Engineering muffler I would have a bracket welded on as Flybox suggests/

Thanks bankerdanny! Do you guys recommend welding the muffler and header as well or just keeping them separate and clamped?

Slid the clamp on the muffler, and then slid the muffler onto the header.  Cinched it down.
Done.

Just clamp it.
