550 replaced clutch and cable...slight slip question
« on: July 24, 2018, 06:55:05 PM »
Ok so I have replaced the clutch plates. The clutch cable as well. 76 550. I've been trying to figure out the correct medium for the cable. I think I'm almost there but still having slight issues. I'm not a savy tech person so I did try my best before having to ask on here.
The bike when clutch is in wants to go just a fraction of a bit. I feel it giving on me at stop sign when I put in gear and ready to go.
When I ride it and shift up it's pretty clean..no issues ...but when I give it gas after shifting maybe one or two of the gears will slip then catch. It's nothing drastic..but it's happening. The bike is solid when downshifting. I haven't really gunned it in higher gear just been very testing on it if I may say. I don't wanna get to crazy on it but I do like to be hard on the bike...it's a cafe racer build.
So I'm now confused on what way i should be adjusting...or what I'm doing wrong. I feel like the clutch lever is really on well and I'm very comfortable with it. It doesn't feel like it's super tight. I have fraction of play and I don't feel like it's straining it. I don't think I want that cause I feel when I do it's almost wanting to snap.
So I'm not futzing anymore with top but do you think I should or what can I do to fix the slight slip and bike wanting to pull on me in first from a stop sign. Any help would be great.

I had this on my 400f last time out. I spent a few days blaming the oil additive I had used but then did a bit of trial and error adjustment on the actuating mechanism at the engine end of the cable, under the triangular metal plate. All sorted after backing off the adjustment a little.

IDK if anyone can give me any advice on this. I tried again today adjusting up and down on the knuckel. It's shifting just fine and the clutch lever is perfect. It's mostly coming out of 1st gear it's reviing up a a tad almost every time then catching gasing back on. IDK what the hell to do anymore or what that issue is? I'm now lost on what is causing that rev out of first ?? Kinda upset now. Frustrated

Have you lined up the marks on the clutch cover. This should be done first before adjusting the cables. Download the manual from this  site and see how to do it

I'm confused what marks you're talking about? I downloaded the manual and it doesn't show much after the reassembling. It goes to the gears after. When I watched on YouTube a installing he doesn't mention line marks on clutch cover. Could this be why I'm getting the slip when I give it gas?? Is there a different manual I should be looking at??

that manual page is for the 500.
go back to the downloads section and make sure you have the supplement for the 550.

I've been futzing with it and it still has a slight slip. I have the lines measured up I think pretty decent . I'm just confused on what is causing the slight slipping

you need to remove the cable from the clutch arm so that it is totally free. then use the adjust screw (2)  to lign up the marks (3) while holding the arm up with your hand. when pushing it up it should stop where the marks align.
then attach the cable to the arm and use the cable adjusters to set the length.

A small adjustment to the position of the mark translates to a larger change at the cable end of the arm.  I had to adjust mine multiple times to get it right.

Mine does not line up exactly.  It is set so that the mark on the arm is ever-so-slightly higher than the mark on the case.

You just need to find the ‘sweet spot’.
